Today was an adventure in bookbinding as I made a little journal using a new technique, secret Belgian binding. My little journal has wood covers, a bit of leather and marbled paper end covers. It is darling and I wish I could show it to you but I don’t have my camera with me. I will try and get a shot of it this weekend for a bit of show & tell.
After class I was still on a bit of a book high and decided to head over to Barnes & Noble to spend more time with books. I’m so glad I did because I took a peek at the New in Paperback table and found a bunch of books I’ve now added to my wish list.
Here’s what I found:
- Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens. Lansens first novel, The Girls, was one of my favorite reads last year. It had me smiling and crying at the end so needless to say I want to see what the author comes up with this time. It sounds like it will be another winner.
- Closer to Fine by Meri Weiss. I admit I picked up this book because Closer to Fine happens to be one of my favorite Indigo Girls songs. Heh. But, the book does sound like something I’d like to read.
- The Concubine by Norah Lofts. Another Anne Boleyn book but this one happens to have been published quite a while back, 1963, so it’s interesting that it’s being re-issued. I wonder how many fiction novels based on Anne Boleyn there are. I’m guessing a lot.
- The Red Scarf by Kate Furnivall. A tale of friendship and Soviet Russia.
- Out Backward by Ross Raisin. A chilling and terrifying story. Ok, the cover does not convey that at all. I’m even more interested now.
- Wish I Could be There by Allen Shawn. A memoir of agoraphobia. That title is perfect isn’t it?
I have to take in my car for service tomorrow morning and I’ve got my book bag packed.
Edit: Forgot to mention, the latest Estella’s Revenge is out!
I still haven’t read The Girls yet! I clicked onto the link to Rush Home Road and I like the premise, so I’m going to get this book!
Can’t wait to see your little journal… 😉
I just found out that our new craft center here has a book binding corner. After seeing all of your great work I’m thinking about heading over there to try it out.
I wish we had a craft center! Can’t wait to see your new one! I am, of course, still loving the one you sent me!
I recently found another cool book craftsman, here is a link to her Spirit Books: http://susankapuscinskigaylord.com/spiritbooks.pdf
She’s also written a book about making books: 500 Handmade Books.
You are so mean to tease us like that!
Wonderful finds!
Keep cool
Some good finds on your list. I can’t wait to see your latest book!
I’m soooo very behind in sending your copy of Blood Roses. I have a friend in from Arizona, so that’s sucked up some time. Let me know if I should still send to your Dallas addy or to Austin!
And that list of books looks truly lust-worthy.
Melody – I hope you put The Girls on your radar. It’s such a good story! I can’t wait to take pics of my little journal too 🙂
nik – Oh do give a try! I warn you though, paper crafting is addictive 🙂
jenclair – Thank you for the link to susan’s spirit books. Those are fascinating! I saw a copy of the 500 Books book as soon as it came out because my bookbinding teacher had one – three of his books made it into this! Isn’t that wonderful? I can only dream of one day making a creation like the ones in this book.
Stefanie – I know, shame on me 🙂 I was just so excited I had to post. I will try to get a picture up soon.
Isabel – Hope you are keeping cool too girl! I know I owe you an email but I’m busy with La Familia!
Christine – I can’t wait to do show & tell too 🙂
Andi – No problem! I’ll send you an email with my austin address 🙂
I read Rush Home Road a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Haven’t got to The Girls yet but should .. someday. I wish you’d stop posting about all these books you find though because I always end up adding some of them to my wishlist! 😉 Looking forward to seeing your little journal.
I haven’t been in a bookstore all summer long!! I think I will hold off until school starts again and go see what’s new! Of course that hasn’t stopped me ordering books or getting them from the library…And your book sounds cool–I love the look of that technique and look forward to when you can share photos!
I’m glad you mentioned Rush Home Road – I was also a big fan of The Girls.
I have The Girls sitting on my bookshelf but have been a bit apprehensive about starting it for some reason… maybe it need to be bumped up.
I LOVE the Indigo Girls!! 🙂
