I met up with my foreign authors book group last night to discuss A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka (click on title for more of my thoughts). I wasn’t as impressed with the book as I expected to be but it was a quick read. I think everyone found the book an easy one compared to some of the other books we’ve read this year.
Next year we are starting off the year with Ines of My Soul by Isabel Allende. I have a lot of Allende books but this is one that’s missing from my shelves. I think this means a trip to the library is a must.
Of course while waiting for book group to start I wandered around and found the latest issue of World Literature Today. This is one of those magazines I want to subscribe to but then I remember how many subscriptions already arrive in our mailbox. What do you think? Should I go ahead?
Anyway, today was another exciting day of bookbinding. My first book is done! It’s sitting under some heavy books right now and I can’t touch it for the next 24 hours but I will be showing pictures because I really want to show it off. Hee.
I subscribed to World Literature Today based on your recommendation and I really do enjoy it. Still, like all my other magazines, it tends to get read a month or two late. I don’t know why I keep subscribing to magazines when I know I don’t make the time to read them regularly. Still, it’s nice to know they are there.
I wish I could hire you to do some book binding for me. 🙁
I can’t wait to see it! I want to make my own books one day, too. But it’s something I’m putting off until I get back to the States. In the meantime I’ll live vicariously through you *wink*
I’m looking forward to seeing pictures of your book!
I’ve contemplated reading the Lewycka, but I never seem to get around to it–too many other books I want to read first. I can’t wait to see your first book, too. Do you already have plans for its use?
Perhaps you should wait on the subscription until after Christmas…you never know – Santa might be extra good to you this year! 😉
I am looking forward to reading “Ines of my Soul”….
I can’t wait to see your book!!
If you wait, I can give you my old copies when I make a trip to TX this spring.
World Lit. Today does look tempting, though I’m sure it would pile up around here. I’d love to see your book!
I wasn’t that impressed with the Tractors book either — it irritated me a little, in fact.
Literary Feline – You did?! I get behind on my magazine reading as well. It’s hard not to right. One of the students in my class is doing restoration work and it’s so amazing! Maybe one day I’ll do some of that.
aka Nik – It’s a lot of fun to do! Beware, it becomes addicting. Ha,ha.
Tanabata – I also need to post pics of some older book projects. I’m just perpetually behind!
Danielle – This is terrible but usually my first books of any kind of structure just sit around. I like to leave those as samples. I know, weird.
Christine – Alright, I’ll let Santa know 🙂 I think Ines will be a good book. I have high hopes!
Isabel – Aw thanks Girl but I think I’ll pass. I can barely keep up with the new editions 🙂
Tara – They have really good articles usually and I love that they also include poetry. But, yes, I’m afraid of it piling up too!
Dorothy W. – Yep! I think I’d go ahead and give her latest book a try to see what she does but I’m in no rush. I was surprised that most of the members in the group liked the book. Usually they are a lot more hard on books than I am!
I always like reading your book group notes. I have Tractors, but don’t know when I’ll find time to read it.
3m – I know, when do we find time for all the books right? Well I wasn’t too keen on the book but like I said, my book group seemed to really enjoy it. So who knows 🙂
