Tonight was my Murder on Mondays book group night and we met to discuss Dope by Sara Gran. Like I expected most of the group didn’t enjoy the book all that much. I think the main problem was that we expected a mystery and this was not one. You can read more of my thoughts on the book here.
That’s two books in a row we’ve read that have not been real standouts so hopefully next month we’ll have better luck when we meet to discuss Real Murders by Charlaine Harris. I’m looking forward to our May book which is What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris. I’ve had that book on my TBR stack for at least a year!
I also posted my review on A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George (click on the title). Loved it and it also happens to be my third book for the First in a Series Challenge.
Finally, to end this night with still more mystery flair I’ve got the latest Mystery Scene on my nightstand. On the cover is Minette Walters, another crime writer I really enjoy. If you’ve never read her books I recommend The Sculptress. Creepy.
Iliana, I’m sorry to hear the group didn’t enjoy the book, hopefully the next book will be better!
Thanks for the great review, and also the link to The Sculptress, indeed it sounds very intriguing! I’ll have to add it to my wishlist. 😉
You’ve definitely made me want to try Elizabeth George. I’ve added this first book to my wishlist. Hope you have better luck with next month’s book group book.
I do love Elizabeth George, but must have missed this one. I’ll have to go back and pick this one up!
Well, next month’s book better be about a mystery.
Better luck.
Melody – I really like a lot of Walters books, especially her earlier novels so hope you give her a try 🙂
tanabata – Yay! I do hope we have better luck next time. We were doing great so I guess our winning streak had to come to an end. ha.
jenclair – This is the first one so it is older and you know how bookstores are, sometimes they only carry the newer books in a series. I already have book 2 lined up!
Isabel – Exactly, I don’t even know why we picked this as it wasn’t in the mystery section. The group is pretty adamant about only reading books from the mystery section. Oh well.
I read What Angels Fear and loved it. Have fun with it.
I’ve joined (created, actually) a new f2f book group and our first selection (Inheritance by Natalie Danford) was a dud, imho. It’ll be interesting to see what the others have to say about it. Maybe it’ll turn out to be a great discussion!
Hey Girl, I know it’s been a while since I’ve visited your blog, but wanted to say that it was great to see you at book group last night. I’m hoping our next month’s book is better too. I’m liking the Peter Robinson book Gallows View, have we read his work in our book group already?
I hope your next book group book is a hit -seems like you’re due for one!
I’m glad you liked A Great Deliverance! There are so many more in the series – lucky you, to discover them all!
I read something by Minette Walters ages ago, but for the life of me I don’t remember which book! I really need to pick up something else by her. I think I could happily live on a steady reading diet of just mystery and crime books, but lately I don’t seem to read many at all. Sorry to hear Dope wasn’t as good as you’d hoped. I have a copy and would still like to read it, as I love that noir-ish style of book. I’ll have to look for her other one as well.
I’ve got Minette Walters down for crime novels, which I have rarely read and that was so long ago. Hope your group will have a blast read next month. 🙂
Erin – I have a feeling I will enjoy that book!
Les in NE – Oh no your first book is a dud! Well, you never know sometimes the worst books lead to some of the most interesting discussions! Hope you have fun and you’ll have to post and let us know how it goes 🙂
Shadan – I’m so glad we got to catch up! I hope you’ll continue to like the Robinson book and I’ve got more in the series if you want to borrow those. We haven’t read him in book group so I may have to nominate his book next time!
ravenous reader – Yes we are! 🙂 I know, I’m excited to read the next ones. I get the feeling it’s a series I will really enjoy.
Danielle – I’ve read several of her books and liked them a lot except for one of her latest novels. Ugh. Not good. You know, Dope wasn’t terrible it’s just that as a mystery book it failed. Who knows why we read it in our group. I like the noirish style too – have you read any Megan Abbot? I highly recommend her.
Matt – I hope so too! I think I may start the new mystery tonight. I’m in the mood for some light reading 🙂
