I had a great time at book group tonight. Not only did I enjoy a good book discussion, but I got to see one of my best friends, had a cinnamon dolce latte and of course spent some time looking through the new releases. I also picked up the latest copy of Barnes & Noble’s Discover Great New Writers newsletter. What a great way to start the week don’t you think?
Unfortunately the group wasn’t too keen on Whose Body? by Dorothy L. Sayers. I think this is a series that could grow on me. In any case you can read more of my thoughts on the book here. Next month we’ll be reading Agatha Christie, The Body in the Library and The Murder or Roger Ackroyd. I’ve read The Body in the Library so I won’t re-read it again (even though I should as I don’t remember much about it) but I look forward to The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. I’ve heard that’s one of the best Hercule Poirot books.
Also I’ve finally put together some of my thoughts on Suite FranΓΒ§aise, the link takes you to my review. I know it doesn’t do the book justice. It was hard to write about it as I felt like my thoughts and emotions were scattered all over with this book but I definitely recommend it.
And, unrelated to this but have you seen The Hollywood Librarian? It’s a documentary about librarians. Check the director’s blog for more info and a video. Too cool.
It was really nice to see you girl! Thanks for bringing me The Body in the Library. I’m looking forward to reading it. Hope you have a great reading week ahead! π
This sounds like a great time. I will have fun looking thru the new books for this newsletter. I am so enjoying The Amnesia CLinic. It takes place in Ecuador from a first time author.
I loved the Dorothy Sayers series when I read them, but I’d already seen and loved the series on PBS’s Mystery Theater…so that probably made a difference for me in being able to get into them.
I love my book group, too. Thanks for the review of Suite Francaise–I have it on my pile, and I really must read it! Also, the Hollywood Librarian looks funny–did you notice that the production company was called “Overdue Productions”? He he!
Suite Francaise – I was thinking about recommending it for my book group. I trust your word, so now I will.
I guess the people are similar to the people in the Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. Some people were good in that book; others robbed others and it was every man/woman/child for him/herself.
I really liked your review of Suite Francaise. I definitely need to read that at some point. I need to check out that documentary about librarians!
That documentary looks great! Thanks for the link!
Oh, how I wish there were some people here who I could share books with…being in a group and leading a group is TOTALLY different!
Hollywood Librarians sounds so good! π
Thanks for the link to the Barnes and Noble newsletter. I really want to read The God of Animals, Broken Paradise, and Then We Came To An End. So many good pick for summer reading! π
Shadan – It was great seeing you too girl. Hope you enjoy the book!
Nancy – Oh is that a suspense/thriller? It sounds like it would be. I’ll have to look into that!
Robin – I’ve heard from a couple of people now that the series is really good. I’m going to see if my library has any of them.
Gentle Reader – I know, Overdue Production made me smile! I bet that’s going to be so good. I just hope it’ll be a wide-release. I want to see it.
Isabel – There’s so much to discuss about it that I do think it’d be great for a book group selection. Ah, yes the Year of Wonders people were not all sweet villagers were they π
Christine – Thanks girl. I have the book if you want to borrow it!
Stefanie – You are welcome. You’ll have to see if any of the librarians at the library you volunteer at have heard of it π
Maggie – I love both of my book groups. Even when we don’t agree on a book it is still such a fun time.
Amelia – You bet. I marked a couple I wanted to read off the newsletter too. I’m torn on The God of Animals. I may wait to hear what my book blogger friends have to say about that one π
I sure will take up your tag on restaurant meme. I just need a little time to gather my thoughts. π
I’m starting Suite Francise tomorrow as I’m down to the last few pages of Gentle Axe.
I read the Murder of Roger Ackroyd last year–wonderful book! All I can say was Agatha was quite naughty–maybe not by today’s standards, but certainly when the book was published! I will have to read your Nemirovsky review–I need to read that book!
Thank you for your review of Suite Francaise. I agree with you that the characters are quite unsympathetic. I liked that about it though, it felt real to me, and I felt a sense of urgency reading it that I really appreciated. It is really so different reading WW2 literature written in the moment as opposed to looking back and researching the events. I also wonder what the book would have been like had she lived – would it have included battle scenes, concentration camps? I would think so.
Matt – Yay, I’m so glad you’ll do that. I swear if I ever make it to your neck of the woods I’m going to use your blog entries as destination guides π
Danielle – Oooh, I can’t wait to read that now π
Tara – I did like that too about the characters. I know it’s a novel but it just seemed so honest you know.
