I’ve been doing quite a bit of mooching lately and have just added five more books to my shelves. Want to know what I got?
- A Friend from England by Anita Brookner. I really loved Hotel du Lac by Brookner and now I feel like I’m on a quest to get more books by her. There is a quote at the back of this book that I think sums up why I liked her style. “Perhaps the most fundamental question in Anita Brookner’s work is, how is a woman to live?”
- The Disapparation of James by Anne Ursu. I found her previous book, Spilling Clarence, to be very touching and have been wanting to add this one to my library.
- Eye Contact by Cammie McGovern. Ooh another story about children disappearing in the woods. This one is supposed to be quite the page-turner so I’m looking forward to it although I may have to set it aside for quite a while so I don’t compare it too much to the other read.
- While I Was Gone by Sue Miller. Becca recently mentioned this book and it sounded so good I quickly went over to see if I could find it on BookMooch and voila.
- The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. Well, I so enjoyed our last Slaves of Golconda book that I wanted to add another Wharton novel to my reading stack. I think a lot of you mentioned this was your favorite so I’m looking forward to it.
I’m still waiting for a couple of more books so I’ll let you know about those when they arrive. How about you? Done any mooching lately?

After reading your list, now I want to read The Disapparation of James and Eye Contact! I’ll have to check them out. 🙂
I bought/mooched some books lately and you can read my list here. 😀
I need to mooch.
Oh, McGovern is a great writer! I read her first book and really enjoyed it. Isn’t this one about an autisic boy? I’ve been meaning to get it. I look forward to your reviews!
Anita Brookner is one of those authors I’ve always been curious about, especially Hotel du Lac. It’s good to hear you like her. It gives me further motivation to finally read her work.
You got some great stuff! The Age of Innocence is my fave Wharton, too, so I would enthusiastically say, GREAT CHOICE!
I haven’t mooched much lately. I have oodles of points, but I’ve been to lazy to trawl through my wishlist to see if I want anything. Maybe I’ll do that today. I should be planning fall courses, but I could use some procrastination time. hehe
I accidentally bought a book yesterday (‘Speak’, by Laurie Halse Anderson), and I’m planning on getting a few books for my stupidly long train journey this weekend. Possibly Chelsea Cain’s ‘Sweetheart’ if it’s out yet and I can justify buying it in hardback.
I’ve been mooching lately, too. I found an interesting history book on WWI concentrating on the American side of the war and a book of short stories that is a Virago title that looked interesting. I just got it and haven’t had a chance to really look at the contents. I love Anita Brookner and really need to read something by her–it’s been ages.
I’ve never read anything by these authors although I’ve wanted to change that when it comes to Brookner and Miller. I hope you enjoy your mooches!
Man, I need to so some mooching. Some good reads you mooched there!
Melody – I’ll be over to see what goodies you’ve added to your shelves recently! 🙂
aka nik – I hadn’t mooched in a while and now I’m all over it again. So yes, go mooch!
Heather – Really? Great to hear! And, yes this is the one with the autistic boy who’s the only witness to the crime. Should be interesting.
Nymeth – I think Hotel du Lac was one of my favorite reads last year so I do highly recommend that one. I need to read more by her to see if she’ll become one of my favorite writers!
Andi – Procrastinating with books is the only way to go 🙂 I had quite a few points and they were burning a hole in my pocket!
Kaite – Love that accidentally buying a book bit 🙂 I love train and plane rides — lots of reading time!
Danielle – That does sound good! Which Brookner books have you read? Is there a favorite one you have?
Lesley – This is sad but I can’t remember if I have read anything by Miller or not! I keep thinking I have but then I’m not very sure 🙂
Christine – You’ve got to girl! It’s so much fun 🙂
It must be bookmooching time. I just sent out five requests yesterday. I’m getting a couple of Sophie Kinsella books (for a nice light read) and a couple of classics I’ve been seeing in blogging land that I haven’t read (Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights). I also picked up some other book, The Mermaid Chair (I think). It’s looked interesting.
Have fun with your new books!
I’m one of those folks who adore The Age of Innocence. And, I’ve got to get around to Hotel du Lac! I remember when you read it; I rushed right out to get a copy and then stuck it on the shelf. Yeeks.
Nicole – Ah that’s great! I liked Jane Eyre a lot but sort of stumbled around Wuthering Heights. I wouldn’t mind reading that one now. Isn’t it great when all the mooches arrive? I love mooching a bunch of books at a time.
Nancy, aka Bookfool – Ha,ha.. That does happen doesn’t it? I can’t tell you how many times I’ll see a great book review by you guys and I’ll find the book and a lot of time it just languishes on the shelves. We need more reading time! 🙂
‘While I Was Gone’ has just turned up from the library. So many people have been singing Miller’s praise that I felt I had to try her.
Very nice list! I loved The Age of Innocence, and I bet you will too. And the Brookner sounds great — I enjoyed Hotel du Lac too, and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.
Ann (Table Talk) – I know, I’ve seen her mentioned on several blogs and I feel as if I’m really missing out 🙂
Dorothy W. – After I finished Hotel du Lac I meant to read more… I have at least three of her books but you know how that goes!
I also enjoyed Hotel Du Lac very much and I’ve been wondering what I should read of her. I have an answer now! 🙂
I have been looking forward to another book by Anne Ursu so bingo! 🙂
Sue Miller sounds very familiar but I haven’t read her.
Matt – Did you read Spilling Clarence? Wasn’t it great? I wonder if she has other books. I need to go check. I’m still reading the Elizabeth Taylor book I mentioned a while back and I can see similarities to Brookner’s style. I think this will be another author whose books I’ll collect!
