I knew I bought quite a few books over the weekend but I didn’t realize I bought 11. Now these are eBooks so I guess it was easy to just hit the “buy with one click” button. And I also have a couple more on order so, yikes! Let’s face it though, I needed a bit of a treat/pick me up after a tiring month and I got some great bargains on these titles. So let’s get into it:
Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit. This book has been talked about a lot and I have not read anything by this author but she’s been one on my list to discover.
All the Water in the World by Karen Ranney. I recently saw a review of this book and it sounded like a very emotional story and I couldn’t resist it.
The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa. Several of you have recommended this book and I do enjoy dystopian fiction although I haven’t read any in a while given the state of the world lately.
Murder The Boys by Judith Cutler. Again, an author I heard about from you guys and saw that the first book in this police procedural was on sale so I had to get it.
Children of the Land by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo. A memoir from an award-winning poet and a book that’s had quite a bit of buzz this year.
Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. National book award for fiction in 2011 and probably has been on my wishlist since then!
The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai. Here’s another book that received a lot of praise and was a finalist for the Pulitzer prize.
We Are Family by Fabio Bartolomei and The Lost Daughter by Elena Ferrante. Both are Italian books by Europa Editions. I’ve had great luck with this publisher in finding some new authors.
Outsider in Amsterdam by Janwillem Van De Wettering. A classic police procedural set in Amsterdam. I’m all in for this one and it’s my mystery book group’s December selection.
Shadow Over the Fens by Joy Ellis. This is book #2 in the series and I remember reading the first book last year and very much enjoying it but just haven’t gotten back to it.
So now to just find time to read all of these! Tell me if you’ve read these or if you’ve went a bit crazy like me and bought a lot of books this past holiday weekend.
The Great Believers was a favorite a few years ago… a read/listen combo for me. The Lost Daughter is classic Ferrante. I bought that one after being drawn to the cover. Enjoy your new books!
I’ve enjoyed Joy Ellis and Judith Cutler. The Memory Police and Men Explain Things to Me both caught my attention. Eager to hear what you think. 🙂
What a lot of great stories you have ahead of you! The only one I’ve read is Salvage the Bones, which is wonderful. A couple others are on my TBR. I’ve bought Mr. BIP a few for his birthday this month, which is nice, because I get the joy of bookshopping without feeling like I’m directly adding to my own TBR (though sometimes there’s overlap, or if he really enjoys something I end up wanting to read it too).
Are your bookshops closed now, or do you simply prefer ebooks? Ours are really struggling and trying to come up with ways to get people to keep buying (other than via the online conglomerates).
I read Salvage the Bones a few years ago. It’s not a book I ended up loving, but it is a very gut-wrenching and memorable read.
I loved The Memory Police! Hope you do, too. Isn’t it easy to buy books? It’s almost as easy as buying lipstick for me.😉💄
Hahaha, that’s the trouble with e-books, you can get quite a few before you have realized what you have done 🙂 Men Explain Things to Me is great. I hope you enjoy it!
I listened to Shadow Over the Fens a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. As far as new books, I haven’t bought anything in at least a year! I’m focusing on all the books I already own, but the temptation to buy more is very strong right now. A part of me is tempted to buy all those that came highly recommended over the past few years just so I don’t forget to read them. If they’re on my shelves, I will get to them. Thank goodness for Goodreads to remind me of what I want to read.
You definitely deserved to treat yourself, Iliana! I hope you enjoy all of them. I have only read Salvage the Bones, which is beautifully written. It dealt with a topic I have very strong feelings about (dog fighting), which hurt my enjoyment of the book unfortunately. But I know that’s my own personal bias.
Hope you enjoy all the books and I’ll look forward to hearing your thoughts on them, Iliana!
