I got some goodies in the mail today. First, a big thank you to Jenclair who sent me Nameless Night by G.M. Ford. I haven’t read anything by this author so it’ll be a treat to read this thriller.
Author Rosy Thornton was kind enough to send me a copy of her book Hearts and Minds. I’ve heard such wonderful things about this book from Litlove, Ann, and Kimbofo that I know I can’t go wrong with this one. I really like the cover of this book too because I really want a bike like that one, yes, even in pink!
What else, well I started a new book last night and I did have a hard time finding just the thing. After finishing a difficult read I like to go for something a bit more cozy or let’s just say less intense. I figured I might as well get started on the cozy mystery for my April book club so I started Real Murders by Charlaine Harris. I haven’t found it to be as funny as her vampire series and even though this was published in 1990 for some reason it feels older. Or where the 90s really that long ago? I get the feeling I’ll be finished with this one soon so I’ll get back to you on it.
Finally, in case you haven’t checked out the Slaves of Golconda, we have our April selection. We are discussing Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina Garcia. The discussion will start on April 30 so hopefully you’ll mark your calendars and join in.
I’m not going to say that I hope you enjoy ‘Hearts and Minds’, because I’m sure you will. My copy is at this very moment on its way to the States as reading for the plane for my friend, Susan, who is attending a conference in Salt Lake City. I’m hoping she’ll recommend it to all the other academics there. I’m sure the situation can’t be so very different in your universities.
I love a cosy mystery. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on some of these books.
Glad the book arrived safely. Hope you enjoy it!
I have a couple of Harris books that were written before the Vampire series as well. They are the “Bard” Mysteries. I haven’t read them yet. I picked them up a local used book store and they look really good. I can’t wait to read them. I don’t think the one you have is part of that series either. I didn’t realize she had written so many books!
Good luck with the discussion! It’s great to be a moderator!
Have fun with your new reads. It’s still fun to get stuff in the mail, besides bills and junk mail.
Ooh, thanks for reminding me to check the Slaves. I have wanted to read that book for a long time, and now I have my motivation! Also, I want to hear how you like Hearts and Minds. Another book to add to my ever-growing list!
Do you have any nominees for contemporary mystery writers who are as good as Agatha Christie and PD James?
I’m looking forward to the next Slaves book — it should be an interesting read! Thanks for giving us some great choices.
Wow…more books to read, Iliana! 😉
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on these books… and I’m glad to hear that Dreaming in Cuban is selected for your book discussion. I’ll have to look out for this book soon and hope that I’ll be able to find it.
Ann Darnton – I really enjoyed reading your review on it and I’m just sure I will love it. I’ve got a couple of other books ahead of it but I hope to start it soon!
aka_Nik – You know, I kind of have gotten away from the cozies but a good one is always a welcomed treat. This one didn’t quite live up to my expectations unfortunately. I’ll post a review on it soon but in the meantime I’ll have to find another one 🙂
jenclair – Thank you!
Stephanie – Actually this one is part of the Aurora Teagarden series – a librarian! I really liked the premise but the book just feels so dated. I think the Sookie mysteries are definitely better.
Isabel – We get so much junk mail that it is nice to get the good stuff. Are you joining us for the Slaves discussion? You should 🙂
Gentle Reader – Oh, I hope you join us! The more the merrier 🙂
LK – I was very impressed with Elizabeth George. Just read the first in her series. Another who I really like is Martha Grimes. For some reason she does remind me a bit of Christie. Oh and there’s Louise Penny – she’s only got two books in her series but loved those. Inspector Gamache reminds me of Poirot!
Dorothy W. – I do hope it’s a good read too! I’ve not read any Cuban writers before so this should be fun.
Melody – I know, the lists just keep on growing right? ha. I do hope you’ll join us!
I’ve been waiting for some Margaret Laurence books to come from one of Alibris’s vendors, but every night I’ve been disappointed! Maybe today. Isn’t it nice getting books in the mail! And I need to dig out my copy of Dreaming in Cuban. I did read it a long time ago, but no doubt enough time has passed that it’ll seem like I’m reading it for the first time! 🙂
Danielle – I am so excited about the mail too.. Keep hoping my books have arrived! You will have to keep us posted on the Laurence books. Maybe I should see if any of hers are available any more. I was so impressed with Stone Angel. Oh and wow, you are going to re-read Dreaming in Cuban! I hope it’ll still be a good read for you 🙂
