You know what today is? Sure, Tax Day but most importantly the Orange Broadband short list was just announced! I had read one of the books from the long list but it didn’t make it on the short list. From the short list, I have heard lots of great things about Lottery by Patricia Wood and I have Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O’Neill somewhere in the stacks. Maybe I’ll try to read one of these before the award is given in June.
In other bookish news, I started Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina Garcia. This is the reading selection for the Slaves of Golconda discussion coming up on April 30th. If you haven’t started it yet, you still have time and it’s a pretty slim novel too.
And, who doesn’t love some pretty book covers right? Take a look at some of the 50 Excellent Covers that Smashing Magazine selected for their creativity and expression. There are some great ones on here.
Finally, yesterday when I picked up my library holds I noticed that one of the books “looked” different than the others. Broken Colors is published by Europa Editions. I think this is the first time I’ve seen one of their books. Just a bit of investigating and I found their website and complete catalogue. I want more of these books! I think they’d go great with my small collection of Persephones, B&N Classics and Hesperus Press books don’t you think?
Ah…I’ve done my tax some time ago… hate doing them anyway!!!
Thanks for the links; and I’ve a good time viewing those book covers, some of them are so creative and colourful!
Check out A work in Progress’ mention of Aio press. And be tempted.
Thank goodness I got my taxes done. Thanks for the links I love checking out this kinda stuff.
I have heard great things about Lottery too. And I have Lullabies for Little Criminals WAITING for me. It’s sitting in a pile just looking at me!
I’m looking forward to starting Dreaming in Cuban, although I think it will be at least another week until I can do so! I have another group book to read first.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Lottery aswell, it’s getting rave reviews all over the place.
WOW! I actually have one of these books on my tbr pile! #33 House of Meetings. Just another sign that I’m meant to read this, I guess. Very interesting stuff, those book covers. Broken Colors looks interesting, too – for what’s about.
Thanks for the links. I’ve heard good things about ‘Lottery’ too. Course I haven’t read any of the shortlist (yet), or the longlist for that matter! Sigh.
I just got some books for review from Europa!!! I have one on the review pile called The People on Privilege Hill (short stories) that I’m really looking forward to.
Also, LOVE those book covers on the site you linked. I think the red 1984 is my favorite.
Those are some funky covers.
I read Dreaming in Cuban years ago, but I can’t remember anything about it now really–it will be like reading it for the first time. I hate to think how much I forget about books. Thanks for the link to Europa editions–lovely books! They would indeed look nice as a set!
I loved all those covers – thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the link for the Orange; it just shows how bogged down I’ve been with marking that I totally forgotten it as out. I had remembered the Carnegie which shortlists on Friday, but not this. As I hadn’t read anything on the long list I really can’t comment on their choice, can I? I’d better get over to the library site and see what I can do about it. The marking went in this morning, thank goodness!
I absolutely love beautiful covers for books. They look so nice sitting on your shelves or on a table. It just adds to my enjoyment of a good book when it has a beautiful and/or unique cover.
Melody – We did our taxes a while back too and got our refund. We even had a bit of a book splurge so I’m waiting on my books to arrive to talk about them 🙂
Isabel – I did read Danielle’s post on that. I want to check out those too now! 🙂
aka Nik – I love bookish links too. I have a few more to share so hopefully I’ll post them soon.
Stephanie – I know I heard about Lottery thanks to the book blog world! I’m sure it was via Estella’s Revenge zine. I tell you we have the real scoop on books!
Dorothy W. – What little I’ve read I’ve liked and it really does seem to be a quick read.
Claire – It sounds like a good story doesn’t it? I need to get a copy of it soon.
Care – Yay, you got one of the books. There are so many in that catalogue that sound so interesting right? I hope I can get to Broken Colors before I have to take it to the library!
tanabata – I know, I’m always so behind on those prize lists. I was surprised I had read one from the long list. ha,ha…
Andi – I’m so jealous!! Ok, you’ve got to keep us posted on what you think about that book. I am really digging these books and will look for some to start building a little collection. The 1984 cover is a good one isn’t it? I like it and the Murakami one too.
Chrisbookarama – Those older ones are interesting aren’t they? They look so simple compared to the covers now.
Danielle – So glad you are even willing to reread the book for the discussion! I hope you’ll still enjoy it the second time around.
Tara – Glad you enjoyed those!
Ann Darnton – Yay for being done with the marking so you can get back to reading! See, I forgot about the Carnegie. Ok, you’ll have to post on that to remind us about it 🙂
Lisa – I completely agree. I know when I see a pretty cover I’m tempted by the book.
Thanks for the link to the book covers – I just love all things visual and will definitely check it out!
I read Dreaming In Cuban many years ago. I liked it and I’ve wondered if it would hold up to a second read. I’ll be curious to see what you think!
I’ve read (and reviewed) Lottery and am thrilled for Patricia Wood. How exciting to make it to the short list.
Stephanie – Hope you enjoy checking them out. There are some really nice ones there!
Greer – Oh that’s great! Maybe you can join in the discussion – I’ll post info on it as we get closer to the date 🙂
Les in NE – I remember your reviews and interview with Patricia Wood! I really must get a hold of this book!
Oooh, I love linky entries. Also loved seeing your beaded journals in production above. Thanks especially for the Orange prize link; I’m off to read that right away!
