I found the list of the 51 best magazines according to Good Magazine. Have you seen the list? National Geographic is on it and so is The New Yorker. Okay, some good stuff and they did mention Sassy. Ah, I remember that one. That was actually my first magazine subscription.
What I want to know is where is Utne? Where’s Bitch? And, what about Bust? I’m sorry but to me that list is incomplete without those. I mean, People Magazine got on this list but not one of my favorites? Sigh. Did one of your favorites get shafted? Tell me.
On an unrelated note, I’m so excited because I bought a book cradle today. Yay! I’ve been meaning to get one of these thingies for a long time. Just makes it easier to punch my book signatures to get them ready for sewing. I can’t wait until it arrives.
I too was a member of the Sassy generation. It was too ‘grownup’ for me to subscribe to (strangely, ‘Vogue’ was OK but ‘Sassy’ was not) but my best friend had a whole stack in her closet and we used to read them on weekends. Good times…
The Good staff did a Bad Job on their selections. None of the magazines that I read now made it to the list. I have great taste in magazines. They selected People; it’s not bad, but not a great one. I read People while shopping at the grocery store.
I’m not even sure what is their criteria for judging what is “Good” – but the list just seems so pedestrian. I agree with you – Utne’s absence is unforgiveable. I subscribe to Utne and the subscription is worth every single cent of it.
And someone was right to also note – no Economist?! And Paris Review is only #37 – and they state “Until George Plimpton’s death”? I thought it’s still really good.
Er, Iliana, what does the book cradle actually do? I looked at that picture and I can’t quite figure it out.
Love the book cradle! And all of the other supplies offered. Thanks for the link!
Ella – How weird was that. Hmm, I wish I still some of my Sassy magazines just for a kick.
Isabel – I read People at the dentist 🙂
Dark Orpheus – I need to go back and search if they had criteria because they really missed out on some “good” magazines. Oh and a book cradle is used to place your pages in it and stab through to punch your holes, to later sew through them. You can punch your pages without that but sometimes you risk moving the page and getting them off center. This just makes it a bit easier.
Jenclair – Isn’t that site awesome? They have lots of goodies I want.
They seem to base the criteria on the magazine “having a point” not neccessarily based on profit. Can someone tell me the actual point of Tiger Beat? other than getting teenage girls to buy it for the celebrity crushes. There are some good magazine choices on the list but a lot of great magazines missing. I don’t think you can really write a definitive “50 Best” list for everyone…. it really comes down to personal preferences and we all have our own opinions about what is great. What I value in a mag isn’t what everyone else values in a mag.
Cool book making tool.
I’m a few days behind on checking up on you blog, so first I want to comment on your star book! Awesome job on that girl, very cool and original, I love it. As for the magazines, that’s almost a question for Anthony, he’s the major magazine subscriber at our house, but I’m sure he will be disappointed as some of his favorites like “Bicycling”, “Motorcycle”, “Rifleman”, “QST”, and many others didn’t make it to the top 51. I only get the “Cook’s Illustrated” magazine at the moment and even with that one I’m behind a year’s worth of recipes! 🙂
Oh My God! I can’t believe People even made it! It’s such a soap opera magazine. At least Bitch and Ms make statements. What about Ad Busters? Did they make it?!
Whats a book signature? I checked out the link and it looks dam cool (anything about books is cool) but still trying to figure out what it is
Christine – I agree no one will ever agree with any “best of list”. None of my favorite books ever make some of those top 100 lists. ha,ha.
Shadan – Thanks girl 🙂 And, have fun catching up with those recipes.
Nessie – I don’t remember seeing Ad Busters either. Sorry for the bookbinding speak… a book signature is a set of pages. Each book consists of several book signatures bound together.
You pretty much covered it for me. Utne, Bust, and Bitch are my favorites.
I loved getting my Sassy mag in the mail every month. Sigh…
Steph
I would love to learn how to make books! You are so lucky to be able to take classes!
Andi – I knew it 🙂
Steph – Those were the days. Sigh.
Danielle – I bet you’d be great at it. It takes a lot of patience but you already know about that with your gorgeous needlework. The best way to learn bookbinding though in my opinion is through a class. I have tons of books on bookbinding but before I took a class it was hard to really grasp the whole idea.
No Harpers?!?! And I feel your pain about Bitch.
I’ll join the other commenters and give two thumbs down!
Tiger Beat made the list but not Harper’s? Geesh.
Kristen & Stefanie – I’ve never read Harper’s. Really! Ok, I’m going to look for it as obviously I must be missing something.
