I did make it over to Half Price Books over the weekend thanks to Stefanie who left me a comment reminding me of their 20% Off sale. Gotta love a book bargain. Unfortunately my time at the book store was limited but I still came away with these goodies:
- The Last Days of Dogtown by Anita Diamant
- A Glass of Blessings by Barbara Pym (Yay, can’t wait to read another of her books)
- Charlotte Gray by Sebastian Faulks
- Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner
- Gentlemen & Players by Joanne Harris
Today I also received a BookMooch book, Eve Green by Susan Fletcher. Now where to fit in all of these books. I’m seriously running out of space.
I’m so tired today. Isn’t it always a pain to go back to work after vacation? So I’ll save my talk of current reads for another day. Now I just want to crawl in bed and read.

I mooched the Eyre Affair and am eagerly checking my mail everyday waiting for it. I can’t wait.
A friend has promised to send me a copy of ‘Gentlemen and Players’ later this week in an attempt to get me to enjoy Harris’s work. So far I’ve read two and really disliked them. I’ll be interested to see what you think of this and to swap thoughts.
Oooh, nice stash of books, Iliana, which ones are you most excited about?
Despite the time constraints you came away with some great books. They are all authors I’m intrigued by and with the exception of Faulks haven’t read before. I loved BirdSong by Faulks so would be interested to hear your what you think of Charlotte Gray .
Books! Luscious books. I’ve wanted to read the Diamant for some time. I loved The Red Tent, passed up her 2nd book, and now I’m interested in The Last Days of Dogtown.
Nice list! I love Brookner; I read Hotel du Lac last year and liked it a lot. Barbara Pym sounds like fun too.
Let me know about Brookner.
I’m glad you got to go to the sale. I am jealous of your Pym find. I look for her almost every time and all they ever have is Excellent Women which is the only Pym book I’ve read. One of these days they’ll have a different book of hers and I’ll faint with excitement when I find it.
aka Nik – Don’t you love the anticipation of a BookMooch book? I am waiting for one now but I need to go see if there are any others I can mooch.
Ann – Oh no, which Harris books did you read? I loved Chocolat and Sleep Pale Sister but I have tried two other of her books and didn’t get further than page 30. So not sure what’s going on there.
Lotus Reads – I think it’s a toss up between the Pym and the Brookner 🙂
Anonymous – I tried reading Birdsong a while back and unfortunately it was a library book so I didn’t finish it before it was due back. The perils of book borrowing. I am looking forward to this one.
Andi – I know somewhere in the blogosphere someone raved about Days of Dogtown so that’s why I picked it up. Did you not go to the Half Price Sale?
Dorothy W. – You won’t believe me but I’ve amassed several Brookner books (they all sounds so good!) and have yet to read one. Hopefully this Summer that will finally change.
Isabel – I thought about you when I bought this book. I was looking for the one you recently read but they didn’t have it.
Stefanie – Hee! I know what you mean. A book find is a great thing indeed.
I love a good bargain. I need to get some more shelving space to accommodate my recent purchases.
Kelly – I can relate. I’ve totally run out of shelf space and not buying books is just not an option 🙂
Ooh–great books!! Brookner is wonderful, Charlotte Gray was good, and I loved Gentlemen and Players!!! Eve Green is also a good book–it won the Whitbread a few years back!
Danielle – I thought about you when I got Gentlemen & Players. I remember you said you loved it. I didn’t realize Eve Green had been a prize winner. See, I want to start all of these books NOW! 🙂
Very good finds! Hotel du Lac & The Last Days of Dogtown need to be added to my list…
Christine – Those sound good don’t they? I’ll keep you posted!
Great finds at HPB! I also went to the big sale last Friday and came away with a lovely stack myself. Of course as soon as I left I remembered a few things I forgot to look for. I read the Brookner some years ago; I will be interested to see what you think of the Diamant as I read that more recently (2007).
