I went to the Half Price Books sale today – 20% Off of everything! I didn’t go overboard but I found some books that had been on my wish list for a while. Anyway, want to hear what I got?
- A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb. A young adult novel about ghosts and hauntings. I can’t remember who recommended this one but I know it was a bloggy friend.
- Whistle Stop by Maritta Wolff. This is the story of the Veech family, an oversize, poverty-stricken tribe trying to make good in a cruel world.
- Afterimage by Helen Humphreys. From Publisher’s Weekly: Inspired by the Victorian photography of Julia Margaret Cameron, Canadian author Humphreys creatively invents the world behind the images of a costumed house maid. Acknowledging a debt to Jane Eyre, Humphreys sets her beguiling tale in the mid-19th-century English countryside, where doe-eyed Annie Phelan comes to work at Middle Road Farm.
- Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl. It seems like everyone has read this one right? I know it’s one that’s gotten a lot of mixed reviews so I’m curious what I will think of it.
- The Snake Stone by Jason Goodwin. I haven’t read the first one in this series but I’ve heard it’s a great period mystery.
- Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir. This book has been on my wish list for years I think and I’ve even tried too mooch it a couple of times unsuccessfully so I’m glad I found it.
The sale goes on through Monday so I think I’ll have to stop in again during the weekend. How about you, going to any book sales this weekend?

I read A Certain Slant of Light back in 2007! I enjoyed it quite a bit, although I remember it had a few flaws. 🙂
My library’s book sale is next weekend, and I’m breaking my ban on not buying books, so I’m very excited!!
I went to a bookstore yesterday during lunch! They’ve this 20% off for members so of course I wouldn’t want to miss it!!! I bought only two books: The Help and The Little Stranger. Can’t wait to dive into them! 😛
I hope you’ve a wonderful weekend, Iliana! 🙂
It looks like you came away with some good loot. I hope you get a lot of reading done this weekend.
Nice! Haven’t read any of them, but that is a respectable stack! Melody – you hit the freaking jackpot. The Help and The Little Stranger???? Ack!
Helen Humphreys is a really good author, but I haven’t read this one! I have owned A Certain Slant of Light forever, but never read it. Even my sister read it, so it’s weird I haven’t! (She is not a reader, but when she does she just raids my young adult selection… It’s actually not a lot to choose from because I get most of it from the library.)
Yay! I’m going tonight. I can’t wait! I have a copy of Special Topics but haven’t read it yet. Have a great weekend!
We’re definitely hitting the HPB sale!
I read another book by Maritta Wolff a few years ago and really liked it–I have this one as well. And I read Afterimage, too–another one I really enjoyed. Enjoy your new books! I plan on finishing Colm Toibin’s new book, which I really like and hopefully reading the Slaves book….
Eva- Maybe it’s you who I heard it from! 🙂 Yea, forget the ban and have fun at the book sale!
Melody – Ooh, you got books I really want! I just got a coupon for Borders so I think we are going out there tonight! Have a wonderful weekend 🙂
aka Nik – My reading has been a bit on the slow side this week so hopefully I will get some reading done this weekend!
Sandy – I know, I’m jealous over Melody’s finds too 🙂 I want to go back to HPB but I may go to a different location and see what they have.
Kailana – Yay, so glad you’ve liked her books. Too funny about your sister raiding your bookshelves.
Stefanie – Have fun tonight! I have one friend who keeps recommending that book to me and I kind of feel bad I haven’t read it yet 😉
Tiffany – yay, can’t wait to read about the loot you find – have fun!
Danielle – Oh good to hear about both the authors. Both books sounded very interesting. I started the Slaves book finally and am really liking it! I hope you’ll enjoy it.
Special Topics in Calamity has been on my reading list for a long time now. Happy reading.
I’ve had A Certain Slant of Light on my shelves for quite a while too. I suppose I should probably actually read it one of these days. I almost bought one of Helen Humphreys books when I was in Canada over Christmas but didn’t, and kind of regret it now. Next time!
Nice new books there! I read the Pessl and had a mixed response, but I did enjoy the experience of reading it, and I hope you do too!
It took some getting into, but I really enjoyed Special Topics in Calamity Physics once all was said and done. The main character was really smart and endearing. I hope you like it as much as I did!
I have Afterimage waiting to be read, and I really enjoyed Special Topics in Calamity Physics! Hope you do, too. 🙂
Connie
That is quite the haul! Happy Reading!
These all sound great! The Goodwin Series is lots of fun and I’ll have to check out the others.
What a great haul! Afterimage sounds very intriguing.
I listened to Calamity Physics on audio book and enjoyed it. The reader was really good.
Afterimage sounds good! I went to HPB today with the girl (can’t do a full browse, you know) and bought 2 books for me and Captain Underpants for her!
Vasilly – It had been on mine forever too! 🙂
tanabata – I can say that about a lot of books that are lingering on my shelves too! ha. I bet you’ll find lots of good books on your next trip to Canada.
Dorothy W. – That’s what I keep hearing too, a bit of mixed reviews but I’m intrigued so I hope I’ll enjoy it!
Andi – Who doesn’t love an endearing character right? That’s already one good point in its favor 🙂
Connie – Afterimage sounds really good doesn’t it? I am looking forward to it too 🙂
Diane – I wanted more of course but I think I need to do some weeding of the stacks first – haha
Gavin – I’m so glad to hear about the Goodwin series. It sounds really unusual so I can’t wait!
ravenous reader – One of these days I need to find a good book on tape to see if I can get into audio books. The few attempts I’ve made haven’t been too successful!
Tara – Oh fun! I bet she was excited with her book. I need to stop by your blog and see what you got 🙂
gotta love a good book sale! happy reading 🙂 i’m sooooo tempted to sneak out to Borders this weekend since I know they’ll have memorial day sales.
