With all my talk of mysteries yesterday I’ve been thinking about how hard it is to keep up with a mystery series because new books are released all the time. I’m sure if you read any type of series this is something you probably struggle with as well. I am usually caught up with a few special series or at least I’m not too far behind but what about the stories where I’ve only read the first book.
So this is going to be a list-y post to remind myself about those sleuths I want to reconnect with. The sad thing is that I already own some of the second books in the series but you know how it is, shiny new books keep arriving and sometimes older books just keep piling up. Here’s my list of mystery series I’d like to explore more of this year.
The Karen Pelletier series by Joanne Dobson. The series features an English professor who stumbles upon mysteries and shows how deadly the world of academia can be. A nice blend of cozy and crime.
The Detective Inspector Tony McLean series by James Oswald. The first book in the series seems to be a great start to this crime procedural set in Edinburgh.
The Detective Superintendent Roy Grace by Peter James. I found the first book to be quite suspenseful and I can’t wait to see if the rest of the series is the same.
The Commissario Ricciardi series by Maurizio de Giovanni. A wonderful historical set in Naples in the 30s.
The Maggie Hope series by Susan Elia MacNeal. Maggie has all the capabilities of being a successful spy but because she’s a woman she is relegated to being a typist. Can’t wait to see how she shows the British government just what she’s capable of doing.
I’m sure there are a few more I have that I could list but don’t want to let this post get too long. So what do you think? Do you follow any of these and do you think I should continue or put them out of my mind and move on to others?
How about you, do you follow a lot of series reads? Let me know if you are planning to catch up with some of your favorite series this year. Have a great weekend!
It’s always a problem isn’t it? When one read series books, one feels behind constantly. I know I do. I have read the first book in the Maggie Hope series and have others on my shelf, unread as yet. I’ve wanted to start the Roy Grace books for quite a while and think I have the first couple of books. I think I read a Joanne Dobson book a long, long time ago. Can’t quite remember. Sigh. I usually have maybe 10 series that I am totally current on and, by that, I mean that I quickly read each new book. Beyond that, I have dozens that I’ve read some of. I do love mystery series though – the characters and their lives.
I’m waiting for a new Jane Casey. Which I will read in a day, putting everything else aside. Then will have to wait another year or two for the next one. I have quite a few series that I follow, gobble up, then have to wait for more. The main draw is reconnecting with the characters, as Kay mentioned. 🙂
OH, dear: I don’t follow any of those, and I’m afraid to look too closely in case I feel that I should. It’s one of my resolutions to finish some of the series that I’ve started over the years (mystery and otherwise) because I have had a terrible habit of beginning so many and never completing. Even from girlhood!
Two series that I’m reading now are NK Jemison’s Inheritance, which is a trilogy, and Naomi Novik’s Temeraire (which has 9 volumes); I’m reading the last volume in Inheritance and am re-reading the third in Temeraire so that I can read on to some newer volumes (they will make a dragon-lover out of anyone, I swear!). There are so many more in my stack for this year….
Have you considered using FictFact? It’s one way of tracking where you’re at in various series and has some interesting sorting options to make yourself lists if you’re interested (it also seems VERY handy for tracking new volumes and their publication dates, but I don’t find that useful myself because I am so far behind with all the series generally).
I love list-y sorts of posts and often write them myself! 😉 I am with you on liking series books–mysteries in particular. I have quite a few of them myself. I can vouch for Commissario Ricciardi! I was just thinking I am ready to pick up the third book soon! I am working on the newest Maisie Dobbs which is one of the very few series that I am actually caught up with!
I like listy posts too. I haven’t kept up with too many series and I totally agree, there’s so many books and so little time. Happy reading!
I am so very behind in most of the series I read. It’s pathetic really I did a post like this years ago, and probably should do another more updated list. I’m afraid to though. LOL I do love that you made one–it’s always fun to see what others are into. MacNeal’s series is the only one you’ve listed that I am reading too.
So many new authors and new series to catch up with! I like series books but I can be selective. I gobble up series which are written by my favourite authors and then wish they can write faster, lol. Sometimes there’re series which I haven’t read in a long while and I tend to forget about them (think Nora’s In Death series). Anyways, as long as they keep me entertained I’m happy to read anything. Just wish my memory bank can remember all the books I read, ha.
