How’s was everyone’s weekend? Not long enough if you ask me. I always enjoy days with more daylight but it always takes me awhile to get used to the time change. I wish I could take a week off to enjoy a break but I’m quite busy at work and besides we won’t be going anywhere until we have our COVID-19 vaccines. My husband isn’t eligible yet but my mom and I are and unfortunately we still can’t get an appointment. But, Texas thinks it’s okay to open right up. Grr…
Anyway, let’s move on to the books. This weekend I did finish The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner. It’s a story of a woman who becomes a mail-order bride, moves to San Francisco, lots of drama and then a massive earthquake shakes the city. I had some quibbles with a few things but overall this was a book that kept me up reading because I wanted to know how it was going to end as both of the main characters are hiding secrets.
I’m still reading The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert. It is taking me forever to get through this one but I can only take some of the information in small doses. Last week I mentioned that I had started Incidents at the Rue Langier by Anita Brookner. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten further than the first chapter. Again, I sort of blame it on the Meissner book.
Last week in honor of Women’s History month I decided to read The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.  I read this book around a spring break holiday when I was around 13 years old. I am not sure if I realized then how it was going to end but I do know that I was really touched by this book. It is probably one book that led me to a keeping a journal myself.
Finally, last night I started The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson. A thriller set in London and let me tell you, first few pages and already lots of action going on so I’m onboard.
Those are my latest reads. What about you, are you reading any old favorites, new authors, etc.?
The Jigsaw Man sounds good to me! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts of it, Iliana. 🙂
I’m eager to read Sixth Extinction. I can understand your hesitation in reading it each day.
Ugh. This time change always makes me feel like I have jetlag. I wouldn’t mind if I had been able to travel somewhere fun, but nope. Just trying to get used to waking up an hour earlier.
I hope you and your mom can get your shots pretty soon. My husband and I were lucky to get appointments at a local Native American tribal clinic. They seem to have a lot of remaining appointments each Friday, so we were encouraged to sign up so they wouldn’t waste those precious shots.
I’ve just started Circe by Madeline Miller, but haven’t gotten very far. I think I need to devote an hour to it later this afternoon. It hasn’t hooked me yet, so I’m only reading a couple of pages each night. On audio, I’m listening to The Vanishing Half. Only a few chapters in so I can’t decide if I like it or not. Maybe I should just go back to mysteries and start in on the next Deborah Crombie (#4) book or Lady Hardcastle (#2). Those don’t take any effort!
Have a good week and stay safe!
Hope you can get your shots soon! Louisiana has opened up shots for almost everyone now. I want to read The Sixth Extinction, and I realize it is one that will take a while to get through and will alternate reading it and some fast fiction. 🙂
Whenever I think of Anne Frank’s Diary, I am reminded of how mature she was. I heard her father edited her journal entries before publication, but even so, she comes across as remarkably wise and brave for her age. It’s been a while since I read that book, and your post makes me want to go read it again and see how time changes impressions.
I am so exhausted today as well. Takes me a while to get over the time change. I absolutely hate it. I like the extra daylight but see no reason to switch things back again in Fall for the next 3-4 months.
I should probably reread Anne Frank’s Diary. I read it only a decade ago and still remember it very well. Her last chapter just leaves you spooked and very sad knowing that things changed for her after that.
The Jigsaw Man is one I really want to read. Can’t wait to hear what you think of it. 🙂
Anne Frank’s diary was a big deal for me as a young reader and, when I reread it as an adult (which was the first time I actually finished properly) I realized that it influenced me in many ways that I hadn’t recognized earlier. If you enjoy it, I recommend the book by Francine Prose. As well as taking the online tour of their hiding place, which is absolutely amazing. Technology!
I hope you and your mom are able to get appointments for your vaccine soon. It’s hard with the demand being so much greater than the supply at any given time. My husband is still waiting to become eligible just like yours is. I really want to read The Nature of Fragile Things. I think you are the first person I know who didn’t outright say they loved it. I remember reading The Diary of a Young Girl around the same age. It made such a huge impression on me. I should consider re-reading it. I hope you are enjoying your week, Iliana!
