I’ve had a few ARCs arrive at Casa Bookgirl recently and am I looking forward to these. Check out what I’ve received:
- Thursday Night Widows by Claudia Piñeiro. The mystery begins with three bodies lying at the bottom of a swimming pool unbeknownst to party goers on a Thursday night in the magnificent Scaglia house, a gated country estate near Buenos Aires. Behind thee locked gates, shielded from the crime, poverty and filth of the people on the streets, the Scaglias and their friends hide a life of infidelity, alcoholism, and abusive marriages. I can’t remember the last time I read a book set in Argentina so I’m really looking forward to this one.
- Overqualified by Joey Comeau. Joey writes cover letters. He writes letters to Nintendo and IBM. Greenpeace and Absolut Vodka. Yahoo and The New York Times. He begs for unwanted jobs. He suggests good and services that could fill the cracks of a broken past. He has ideas. Being that I’ve been writing my fair share of cover letters lately, I think this could be a fun book to read.
- Last Night in Twisted River by John Irving. In 1954, in the cookhouse of a logging and sawmill settlement in northern New Hampshire, an anxious twelve-year-old boy mistakes the local constable’s girlfriend for a bear. Both the twelve-year-old and his father become fugitives, forced to run from Coos County—to Boston, to southern Vermont, to Toronto—pursued by the implacable constable. Their lone protector is a fiercely libertarian logger, once a river driver, who befriends them. I loved A Prayer for Owen Meany and am actually surprised I haven’t read any other of his books. I am looking forward to this one definitely
- The Last Empress by Hannah Pakula. This book is a tome! It sounds fascinating though as it’s the story of Madame Chiang Kai-shek. This is the story of the founding of modern China, starting with a revolution that swept away more than 2,000 years of monarchy, followed by World War II, and ending in the eventual loss to the Communists and exile in Taiwan.
So, how about you? Gotten some good ARCs recently?

These books sounds great! I’m most interested in Thursday Night Widows and Last Night in Twisted River.
I look forward to reading your thoughts on them. Happy reading, Iliana! 🙂
Looks like you got some good ones. I think they all sound interesting but Thursday Night Widows and Overqualified are probably the ones that appeal the most to me as I am reading this tonight! Of course tomorrow I might say something else depending on my mood! Have fun reading!
The Last Empress is the one that appeals to me! I’ve read both nonfiction and fiction about this period and remain fascinated and horrified. The 20th century was a turbulent one for China.
I received Thursday Night Widows too. I don’t think I’ve read a book set in Argentina before. It sounds like it will be a good book. I hope you enjoy all your new books, Iliana!
I got one which I have to read for Pump up your Book Promotion and it is Family Plots by Mary Patrick Kavanaugh – it is semi – autobiographical and i m liking it so far.. that is i have read 19 pages 🙂
The Last Empress sounds really good!
I hope Irving’s new book is a good one. I like him a lot but find I have to space his books out otherwise there is a tendency for them to grate a little. Hotel New Hampshire, one of his older books, is marvelous and quirky and sad and laugh out loud funny, one of my favorites of his. I’m cutting back on my Arcs but I should be getting one of Terry Pratchett’s new Discworld book soon. That will be fun.
No ARCs in my house but I did pick up Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet at the library. The John Irving books sounds very interesting.
I’m excited about John Irving’s latest book!
The Last Empress sounds fascinating, and I hope the cover letter book is interesting. I’ve read my fair share of horrible cover letters recently. Happy reading!
Melody – They do sound good don’t they? I’ve always wanted to go to Buenos Aires so I’m very curious about the Widows book. Funny, when I first saw it I wasn’t intrigued by it – the cover just didn’t do it for me – but once I read the synopsis and the press release I definitely want to read it!
Kathleen – Ha,ha.. I know what you mean. I’m such a moody reader which is why sometimes books I’m so excited about end up languishing on my shelves for years before I finally get to them.
jenclair – A fascinating look at history indeed! Although I think I’m going to need a bookstand for that book. It is heavy! 🙂
Literary Feline – Oh I can’t wait to hear what you think of it! I’m still trying to think if I’ve read a book set in Argentina and I can’t think of one. How awful!
Veens – Woo,hoo! I have to catch up on your blog and see what you think of it.
Marg – I think so too!
Stefanie – oh, now I want to read Hotel New Hampshire! Yea, I’ve been cutting back on ARCs big time. I love them but then I do feel pressured to get those books read soon. None of these I requested so I feel a bit less of the pressure 🙂
Juliann – Hotel is a good book. Very readable although there is one thing I didn’t care for too much but still a good book. I hope you’ll enjoy it!
Stephanie – It’s a big book too! I don’t mind tomes but I really have to be in the mood to read a big book – it’s a commitment 🙂
Anna – I’m really intrigued by the cover letter book. I think it’ll be laugh out loud funny – I hope anyway! 🙂
Good ones it seems! My favorite Irving is “The Cider House Rules”. I am going to the bookstore today. I have two hours to “lose” waiting for new locks for my house. Thanks Iliana
sounds like some great ARCs 😉
Overqualified sounds interesting.
A tome about China! Sign me up 🙂 Hehe and the line about the boy mistaking a woman for a bear made me giggle, love John Irving most fo the time.
I also received Last Night in Twisted River; it sounds good. The others you received are new to me titles. hope you enjoy them.
roxane – Oh I wonder what goodies you’ll find at the bookstore! You’ll have to blog about your finds 🙂
bookworm – Doesn’t it sound fun? I hope it will be!
Jodie – hee, hee…. Seriously, I don’t think I can read that book in bed. It’s huge, if for some reason I start to fall asleep I may hurt myself 🙂
Diane – I’ll be looking forward to your review too! Want to see what you’ll think of that one.
The Last Empress by Hannah Pakula and Thursday Night Widows by Claudia Piñeiro sound like two books I’d love to read. Thanks for sharing your latest books.
