I hope you all had a great weekend. It was a busy one for me but I was able to do a few things that brought me a lot of joy and made me feel like life was almost normal. In March I had signed up for a class at the Austin Book Arts Center but then things started to get cancelled due to the pandemic. Well, they finally were able to host a virtual over zoom. They mailed out kits and some background info ahead of time and honestly even if I hadn’t received my kit, being that I do bookbinding I have a lot of stuff on hand.
The class was only a few hours but it was a lot of fun. I learned to make book cloth which basically just opens up a whole new way to decorate your book covers. The reason you want to back the cloth before you use it on the book board is so the glue doesn’t seep through and it makes it more sturdy and easier to work with when covering your boards.
I used a fat quarter for my trial run but you can use all kinds of fabrics. The sky is the limit. Granted if you are using silk or a very thin fabric the method we used might not be the best because it required an iron but there are other ways to get around that.
The other exciting part about the weekend is that my husband and I “attended” another Austin Classical Guitar concert and it was a performance by two musicians, Duo Sonidos, a guitarist and violinist. Lovely music by Handel, Manuel de Falla and others. Have I ever mentioned that my husband plays guitar and I used to play the violin? Maybe you’ll see us touring when we’re in retirement. Haha…
How about you, how was your weekend? Let me know if you did something different or what did you do that brought you joy?
Glad you were able to enjoy some experiences to make you happy this weekend.
Sounds like a great weekend! I’m glad you enjoyed the book cloth class and how wonderful to “attend” a Classical Guitar concert!
Hello Iliana,
I have read you blog for several weeks and really enjoy checking in Something fun my husband and I do is Coffee Picnics! We pack a blanket, flask of coffee, nice cups, plates, some treats to enjoy and a couple of books That and a nice shade tree to sit under and you all set. Living in the North East , it can nice outside … Right now, too hot some days, but we do our best to get out of the house!!
Making a nice cup of coffee is one of the New Skills I have learned since being at home
This book binding class must have been so interesting. Last fall I went to the Folk School Festival at the John C. Campbell Folk School in western North Carolina. I visited some of their classes and one they offered was a week-long book binding class – I would have loved to take it (plus the setting was so nice, right there in the mountains.) I know people enjoy reading on kindle but there is nothing like the feel of a book.
Marg – Thank you! It was such a fun weekend.
Jen Mullen – We missed out on a couple of live performances due to the pandemic but so nice to have this possibility!
Hester – Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting! I love the idea of coffee picnics. It’s way too hot here in Texas for us to do that in the summer but I could definitely see us trying that out in the Winter. Thank you for sharing that. I love it. Hope you get to enjoy many more this summer.
Vagabonde – Ooh I’m jealous. I really want to visit the school and of course take some classes. Now that you mention them I wonder if they are doing any online learning. Will have to check them out. I’m with you, although a Kindle is a great convenience nothing beats a real book.
Cute book cover! 🙂
Hey, you and your hubby can start sharing videos of the two of you playing your musical instruments just like Rod! 🙂
