Hello Bloggy Friends – I didn’t mean to take a blog break but just got caught up with other things and one day turned to the next. You know how that goes. So I had decided to take a full week off but then today I read the news about Borders and I’m just so bummed out and had to talk about it with other bookworms.
I know they are a big box bookstore but really any time a bookstore closes it’s a sad day isn’t it? My husband and I typically go to Borders for our date nights as we have two Borders near us and now those stores are closing. Luckily we still have Barnes & Noble and we do have a wonderful indie bookstore in town, unfortunately it’s not as close by.
I don’t know when the stores will be closing but you bet I’ll be going by as much as I can.
Anyway, that’s it for now. I am going to take the rest of the week off from blogging but I will try to be back for Sunday Salon. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and go show a bookstore some love ok. I know I will.
I knew about the closing today; it’s so sad! 🙁
Hope you have a good week and I look forward to reading your posts soon! 🙂
Oddly, Borders isn’t very popular in SA compared to other bookstores, and yet they aren’t closing any of the ones here. Granted I think there are only three in the entire city, because as I said, it’s not very popular…
I’m sorry to hear about Borders 🙁 We don’t have them here, but like you said any bookshop that closes is a loss. Enjoy the rest of your break, and see you on Sunday!
Melody – I’ve hardly had any time to read so my reading has been dismal and I’ve had some DNFs! Maybe it’s me 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend.
Amanda – I was so surprised about the closing of the Austin stores because they are always packed! I’m glad to hear you still get to enjoy them. I haven’t been to SA in forever so maybe next time I go I’ll have to visit one!
Nymeth – I’m definitely going to Borders this weekend and hopefully I can find out how long they’ll be open. See you in blogland!
It’s sad, isn’t it? I was always a Barnes and Noble girl until the Borders was built relatively close to my house in Allen off 75. I don’t think that particular store is closing–which is awesome because it’s on my way home from work–but many of the others in Dallas are closing. It’s where I buy all of my regular priced books so I’m not sure what I’ll do now. Sad sad sad. Makes me scared for the future of these bookstores!
The UK arm of the business closed…last year was it? It was sad because their selection was so wide and you could borwse for hours without feeling that the staff wanted to shift you out the door. For a girl who really doesn’t have that many indie bookshops in her area they added some nice bariety. Now I live in a country where we have just 2 chain of bookshops (one which is officially a stationers). I miss Borders, use it while you still can 🙁
Yeah, mine near my house is going. Our indie went out of business last year so I guess that leaves B&N, which isn’t so convenient. Blah. Sucks to see the industry you love the most go down the tubes.
I just blogged today about my love/hate relationship with big box bookstores.
we never had a borders here (not that i know of anyway!) lots of easons & bargain bookstores though 🙂
& yeah it is sad but on the up-side bargains to be had!
The one in New Orleans is closing and the one in the next suburb is also.
More unemployed people. Sad
I’m sad about Borders too. In my community there are almost no indie bookstores. If I take the train to San Francisco I can find tons but where I live I have to rely on Borders and Barnes and Noble. There are 3 Borders in my area and they are all closing! I hope you enjoy your blogging break.
I was sorry to hear about it as well. Luckily our local stores are slated to stay open–for the moment anyway. I noticed after Christmas that the selection wasn’t as good as it usually is, but maybe they’ll rebound after the dusts settles. I hate the idea of yet more bookstores closing!
I just checked the list and our store is scheduled to close at the end of April. 🙁 That leaves only Barnes and Noble & a couple of used bookstores. Very sad.
I heard about Borders 🙁 Theres one just five minutes from home. There’ll be no book stores nearby now.
It is sad when a bookstore closes. I wonder what happened. ebooks? I am glad to see that my husband and I aren’t the only ones whose dates take place in bookstores.
My husband and I also go to bookstores for date night! We go to B&N or BAM. I don’t have a Borders around me, but I hear they are amazing. So sad to hear about it!
I’m really going to miss Borders! They closed the ones down here awhile ago but the ones around my mom’s house was where I went to get my fix. 🙁
I’m so sorry you’re losing both of your Borders stores. Ours is safe, for now, but I would have been crushed if we’d lost it. It’s definitely my favorite bookstore and the place I go to relax (even though it’s a 60-mile drive).
I thought about you and your date nights and felt so bad to see all those TX stores on the list of closures. 🙁 🙁 I still have former coworkers and friends working at one in Fort Worth. The Burleson store is closing, as are several in the Dallas area. So sad.
Borders is my favorite of the big-box bookstores so I’m bummed, too. I hope they can keep at least some of the stores open and continue to have the selection I’ve come to expect from them.
Actually, if the atmosphere of a B&N were combined with the selection of a Borders, that would be the perfect big-box bookstore.
