I was reading some articles on NPR about favorite poems, best poems, etc. of the last year and all I could think about was that I hadn’t read any of those poems and in several cases hadn’t even heard of the poets. I do enjoy poetry but it was sort of absent a lot in my life last year, especially towards the end of the year.
So after reading those articles it was a good motivation to go to some of my favorite web sites to read poetry – Poets and Poetry Foundation. I spent a good part of this evening reading some winter poems and here’s one I really liked:
Winter Trees by William Carlos Williams
All the complicated details
of the attiring and
the disattiring are completed!
A liquid moon
moves gently among
the long branches.
Thus having prepared their buds
against a sure winter
the wise trees
stand sleeping in the cold.
I especially like the last part. Can’t you just picture that? I hope you enjoyed reading this poem. If you’ve read a great poem or discovered a new poet lately please share, I’d love to bring more poetry in my life.
Hello Iliana, I have discovered Marge Piercy with those three poems “To Have Without Holding”, “THe Moon is Always Female”and “The crooked inheritance”. Her poetry is so powerful. A woman voice with all the strength and courage that one needs. You might know her already. Of course anything by Tony Hoagland. Also, I have been reading from this wonderful book “Language for a New Century” (Contemporary poetry from the Middle East, Asia and Beyond) There are some real gems in there. Nice to have you back, I missed your posts, selfish me. Can’t wait to see what you do jewelry wise.
I would love to use this in my Intro to Lit class when we discuss imagism. Beautiful!
I really like William Carlos Williams and that poem is beautiful. I can see this happening in NYC as the winter closes in. I think its time for a visit to Central Park and will have to keep this poem in mind. 🙂
Another poet I really enjoy is Mary Oliver. If you have not read anything by her you should look her up. I think you would enjoy her poems.
Fabulous poem, thanks so much for sharing it with us. I work in a library so I’m going to run up and check the shelves and see if I can find any of these poets.
Oh, that’s a good poem! Thanks for sharing it!
What a lovely poem and perfect for the season. Thanks for sharing the links to the poetry sites. I’ve read very little poetry the last few years and have missed it. I need to make it a point to read more in 2012!
I love poetry and glad to see it when it’s posted on my favorite blogs! 🙂 Happy New Year.
