It’s been a while since I’ve done a meme and when I saw this one over at A Reader’s Journal recently, I thought it’s time for me to play. So here are my answers:
1. What author do you own the most books by? That would be authors Ian Rankin, Peter Robinson, and Martha Grimes. I love their series so I have a lot of their books. Some I’ve read and a bunch are waiting for me.
2. What book do you own the most copies of? No double copies here unless it happens to be a book I have in Spanish and English but I only have a few of those.
3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions? Nah.
4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with? I can’t think of one right now.
5. What book have you read the most times in your life? I’m not much of a re-reader but I have read Love In the Time of Cholera, The Handmaid’s Tale and Remains of the Day twice.
6. Favorite book as a ten year old? I would have been in fourth or fifth grade so I’m sure it was Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume.
7. What is the worst book you’ve read in the past year? This is tough because if it’s a book I’m really not liking then I won’t finish it. That said, I was disappointed by some books mainly this one because I love novels set in Victorian England and this one just didn’t live up to my expectations.
8. What is the best book you’ve read in the past year? I read some great books last year so I’ll narrow it down to In the Woods by Tana French
9. If you could force everyone you know to read one book, what would it be? I’m always recommending The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver
10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie? I think some of Georgette Heyer’s books would make wonderful movies. In particular, Regency Buck.
11. What is the most difficult book you’ve ever read? North by Louis-Ferdinand Celine. Read it for a book group and it was a most confusing book.
12. What is your favorite book? This changes all the time but for today I’ll say The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
13. Play? Romeo and Juliet
14. Poem? Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins is a favorite.
15. Essay? Not much of an essay reader so I can’t think of one.
16. Who is the most overrated writer alive today? I can’t name names! It could be someone’s favorite author.
17. What is your desert island book? It has to be something big so maybe The Complete Novels of Jane Austen so I can finally read them all.
18. And . . . what are you reading right now? I’m almost finished with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. So off to finish it!
I haven’t read Love In the Time of Cholera yet, but that’s because I’ve read some mixed reviews about it but still, that doesn’t stop me from reading it. It’s just a matter of time… 😉
In the Woods is definitely one of my best reads for last year too. 🙂 And I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society!
I have marked the 2 books you have mentioned as tbr 🙂
I have to read books by the authors you have mentioned here 🙂 and this is a wonderful meme 🙂
You’ve got some great books on here! For some strange reason, I couldn’t get through Cholera…I must have been in a mood. I loved Tana French’s The Likeness and I have In the Woods on my shelves begging for attention (of course I’d have to read them out of order!). I enjoy this meme. It really gives us an insight into Iliana!
Fun meme!
What a fun meme. I really need to go back and finish The Book Thief. I started it during a tough time and I would like to go back and read it. Tissues and all!!
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is going to be my next read I think…
Looking forward to your thoughts on The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I really liked that book.
Melody – Yea, I think either people love it or hate it. I just think the language and imagery is beautiful in that book. I can’t wait for Tana French’s next book! Oh and loved the Potato Peel Pie book. I just wish it had a different title 😉
veens – which books did you mark? I hope you’ll enjoy them! It’s a fun meme isn’t it. Have you played yet?
Sandy – I hope you’ll give it another go and hopefully next time it works. That happens to me sometimes. Oh and even though you read the French books out of order I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Both were great but definitely felt like standalone novels.
Tiffany – 🙂
Christine – Oh you must girl. I just think about that book and it still makes me sad. So yes just keep your tissues handy 🙂 Can’t wait to hear what you think of the Potato book!
Kailana – It was so sweet. I loved it but I just wish it had a shorter title – haha…
Iliana, I must say that we do have the same taste for many favorite books and authors. Best book: The Book Thief
Favorite of the Year: In the Woods
Forcing a book on someone else (I have tried it many times…ahahhaha)but for the other two also: The Bean Tree
Billie Collins… so much to say here but “perfection” says it all.
I have not tried any Georgette Heyer’s books but I am intrigued. I just borrowed The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (long hard title for me to remember…) not what I would have picked but I want to know what the hipe is all about. Can’t wait to start “The Likeness”.
Every time I’ve seen The Book Thief in the stores I’ve almost bought it, but not yet, I really should though it looks so good and now you have it as your current favourite (high compliments!)
You know, I’ve never read anything by Barbara Kingsolver. It sounds like I should do something about that!
Thanks for the heads up, I’ll stay away from the Barnes book.
I’ve never Kingsolver, but maybe I finally should.
Love In the Time of Cholera, The Handmaid’s Tale and Remains of the Day00that’s three books I have read more than once as well!
I haven’t read The Remains of the Day twice, but I need to read it, again. It’s one of my all-time favorites. That was fun reading! 🙂
I have Peter Robinson’s entire “opus” …love his books. About time for a new one, isn’t it??
Roxane Stoner – Oh that’s wonderful! I wish I could have you over for a cup of coffee or tea and we could chat about books we’ve loved 🙂 I really hope you’ll enjoy Heyer whenever you get to her. I didn’t think I would like her at first as all I heard was that she was a “romance” author and although I like a bit of romance in my stories I was a bit skeptical but the books I’ve read have been so witty and with great heroines so I do recommend those!
Claire – You must read it. I would love to hear what you think of the story! I didn’t think I’d like it much at first as it’s a YA book and when I read it I wasn’t really reading Young adult novels but am so glad I got over that. The book appeals to both young and old!
Nymeth – I really like her writing and would also recommend The Poisonwood Bible. I think Bean Trees is probably my favorite though and the one that doesn’t seem to get as much recognition as P.B. so I typically go for it 🙂
Mike B. – Well, you may like it. It started off pretty good too but the story just got more and more confusing as it went on and I just lost interest!
Matt – Ha, that’s so funny! 🙂
Bookfool, aka Nancy – It such a fabulous story isn’t it? Have you seen the movie? Love it too! 🙂
ravenous reader – Yea, you are right, he should have a new one coming out soon. That’s ok, I don’t mind as I’m still a bit behind in the series – I think I’m up to book 10. I just know something big is going to happen in this one!
How cool that you have all those Rankins. We’re working on our own collection, but still have a lot to acquire. And I’d choose the collected Jane Austen as well!
fun meme 🙂 I need to read The Book Thief one day.
Do you read books in Spanish? I have a few, like Like Water For Chocolate in spanish, but for some reason when I try to read them, I don’t connect with the story as well as when I read books in English.
Its almost like i’m so focused on reading the words since they are written in Spanish, that I forget to pay attention to the story.
I picked up THE BOOK THIEF a month or so ago; I hope to read it this summer.
I haven’t yet read any Georgette Heyer, but have heard glowing reports all around!
Dorothy W. – Isn’t he great? I’m at book seven now? Hmm, I gotta check my list 🙂
bookworm – Oh I hope you’ll love it! And, when I first start reading a book in Spanish it does take me a little while to get into the rhythm. I do read something in Spanish (usually a news web site) everyday though so that’s probably what helps!
Dawn – I promise you won’t be disappointed with it. It’s just such a wonderful story. And, I had never read any Heyer until a couple of years ago but what fun her books are!
I’ve not read Regency Buck yet–some of her books really would make great movies (all those great period costumes!). I really liked the Tana French book, too and have her second novel ready to read (of course…again!).
