Confused Bookgirl

You know you’re thinking of too many books and other bookish things when you realize you have picked up the wrong book for book group. I thought my Murder on Mondays book group was reading A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George but we are actually supposed to read The Man With a Load of Mischief by Martha Grimes. Don’t ask how I got those two mixed up.

Luckily I got a reminder email from the group leader and saw my mistake. I have the right book now and will save the Elizabeth George book for another day. In case you are wondering why we are reading older books, well, we always start with the first book in a series.

Unfortunately I’ve been so busy this week that I’ve barely had a chance to open the books for my reading groups and I don’t think I’ll be able to do much reading in the next few days. As I’ll be making books instead of reading them.

I’m off on a bookbinding retreat! Well, I don’t know about not reading at all. I’m sure I’ll sneak in a few chapters here and there. Now I’ve got to make sure I’ve got all my supplies packed. Hope everyone has a great rest of the week and I’ll be back on Monday.

Best Thing

What’s the best thing in the world?
June-rose, by May-dew impearled;
Sweet south-wind, that means no rain;
Truth, not cruel to a friend;
Pleasure, not in haste to end;
Beauty, not self-decked and curled
Till its pride is over-plain;
Love, when, so, you’re loved again.
What’s the best thing in the world?
–Something out of it, I think.

The Best Thing in the World by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Instead of starting my book group reads I picked up How Elizabeth Barrett Browning Saved My Life by Mameve Medwed. Love this book so far! It’s the charming story of Abby Randolph, 30 and single, whose life has suddenly changed after finding herself in possession of a valuable antique.

It’s a light read and I know as soon as I wrote 30 and single you are probably thinking chic lit, but if only all chic lit was this fun, well written and downright different. Plus the references to poetry and other literary things don’t hurt either. I’m about half way through the book and hopefully the rest won’t disappoint.

Oh yes, and suddenly I’m also in the mood to read more of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poetry.

Perfect Reading Day

Today was rainy and gray, pretty much a perfect day to stay indoors and read. I did have to run out to meet a friend for lunch but as soon as that was over I came home and read.

I finished Still Life by Louise Penny, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I am almost done with Disobedience by Naomi Alderman, which is also a very engaging read.

What I need to do now is get started on my November book group reads. My mystery book club is reading A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George. This is the first in the popular Thomas Lynley series. And, my foreign authors group book is Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie. I need to finish both by the beginning of November.
