Book Bargains

My husband asked me if I would help him with some of his Christmas shopping and as it involved a trip to Half Price Books I was only too happy to help.

I found the calenders he wanted and then it was on to some browsing for me. I wandered over to the Clearance Section and got these book bargains:

The Turkish Lover by Esmeralda Santiago
The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig
The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett
The Drowning Room by Michael Pye

All for a dollar each. I love the clearance section. So did anyone else do some book shopping this weekend?

Another Challenge

I couldn’t resist joining Booklogged’s Winter Classics Challenge. I have always lamented not reading enough classics in school so this is perfect for me. The hard part was finding the right books but I finally came up with my five classics.

Emma by Jane Austen – Can you believe I’ve only read one Austen book? For shame.

Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson – Thought it would be nice to offset most of the European settings of the other books with this one.

Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon – Because I do like a little murder and mystery in my stories.

Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth Von Arnim – The Enchanted April is a favorite of mine so I wanted to read something else by this author.

Life & Death of Harriett Frean by May Sinclair – I do like the synopsis but it’s also a really slim novel and that might help me complete this challenge.

I don’t know how well I’ll do as I seem to be falling behind on my From The Stacks challenge. There are more challenges out there but I think I have enough with these two because otherwise how can I still participate in some of the online reading groups, my in person book groups, and still have enough time for MY books?

Okay I better go do some reading.

Merriment

Hear the sledges with the bells – Silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
How they tinkle,tinkle,tinkle,
In the icy air of night!
While the stars that oversprinkle
All the heavens, seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells
From the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells –
From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.
From The Bells by Edgar Allan Poe

Doesn’t that sound so whimsical? I hadn’t read this poem before and when I saw it on my Poem-A-Day calendar I thought how fun and how different from the other works of Poe that I’ve read. Ah, well, one quick search at Poets.org and I see that it’s not all fun and whimsy.

Anyway, I do like that stanza and it makes me smile. Know what else made me smile, a visit from St. Nikolaus. He stopped by our home and I got some of my favorite chocolate and some funky pens in all kinds of colors.

Not much new to talk about so I’ll get back to selecting my books for the Classics Challenge Booklogged has put forth. I’ll let you know what my choices will be soon.
