Short Story Challenge

I am so happy to see that Kate is bringing back her short story challenge. I’ve been trying not to go overboard on challenges but this is one that I really hope will inspire me to pick up more short stories. Last year I read eight short stories throughout the year and I think I can do better than that. I want to do better than that.

I’m going to go with Option 1 which is to commit to reading ten short stories by ten different authors over the course of 2010.

I haven’t chosen any stories or authors but so far I only know I want to read more by Alice Munro.

I have a couple of short story collections I can turn to such as, 50 Great Short Stories, Berlin Tales, 20th Century Ghosts and others. In addition I have some back issues of Tin House and Zoetrope: All Story so I think I will be set with enough material to choose from. Granted, I’m always looking for good suggestions so if you have some let me know!

Book Review: White Nights

I’m trying to get caught up on some reviews on books I read in the last week of the year so stay tuned for a few more over the next couple of days. This one is for the second book in the Shetland Quartet series by Ann Cleeves, White Nights.

whitenights.jpg“Perez thought that at this time of year everyone went a bit crazy. It was the light, intense during the day and still there at night… Watching as the man dressed in black knelt in the pool of sunshine and burst into tears, Perez thought it was a case of midsummer madness and hoped someone else would deal with it.”

It’s midsummer in the Shetland Islands and a feeling of revelry seems to permeate the air. Tourists abound and the Herring House gallery is hosting a grand party for artists Bella Sinclair and Fran Hunter.

Unfortunately there isn’t as large a crowd as they expected and the party atmosphere is diminished more by the sudden outburst of one the guests who kneels and begins to cry in front of one the paintings. When Detective Jimmy Perez goes to the man’s aid, the man says he doesn’t know who he is and when Detective Perez leaves him for a bit the man vanishes.

The next day the mysterious man is found hanging in a fishing shed and Detective Perez is convinced he was murdered. Detective Perez feels guilt knowing he may have prevented the murder had he not been too interested in spending more time with Fran Hunter but now he’ll use his knowledge of the island and his background to his advantage.

The author does a good job of describing the setting and how small communities work, with everyone knowing everything about each other past and present. And, while I liked the resolution of the mystery I wasn’t sold on who the culprit was. Still this is a series I will follow as I enjoy Detective Perez because he shows moments of weakness and doubts when conducting his investigation and thus seeming more complex and real.

First Books

I told you I was going to go to Half Price Books and I did.

The first book is Black Fly Season by Giles Blunt. This is an upcoming read for my mystery book group. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this author (I’m not sure if this is a series book) so I am hoping it’ll be a good crime novel.

The next two books are by Angela Carter, The Passion of New Eve and Shadow Dance. I know some of you in the blogosphere are big fans of Carter and I’m hoping I finally get read something by her this year.

Next is Burger’s Daughter by Nadine Gordimer. It seems I’ve been accumulating a few of Gordimer’s books. They just sound so interesting. The other book is Indiscretion by Jude Morgan. I remember when this one came out it seemed to be quite popular in blogland.

The other two are Everything Must Go by Elizabeth Flock and Sudden Rain by Maritta Wolff.

So I’m quite excited that most of these, save the Flock book, are by authors new to me. Have you read any of these? And, most importantly did you already buy some new books this year?
