Disappearing Acts

The weekend is finally here and I’m so happy. It’s been a long week at work as we are in the middle of some big projects and I’m still not getting the best sleep but change is coming soon so that’s something I’m very excited about and will share with you later.

In the meantime, I keep disappearing from the blog and blogland and I don’t like it but I refuse to blog when I don’t feel like it. Then it feels like chore doesn’t it? Anyway, eventually I’ll get my routine back.

So this weekend one thing I’m very excited about is the Austin International Poetry Festival. There are readings, slams and even workshops going on at various locations throughout the weekend. I hope to at least go to one reading.

What else? There is also Dewey’s Read-A-Thon which I won’t be joining unfortunately but hope those of you who are participating have a blast. I can’t wait to read some of the reports of books read, total hours, and snacks consumed. Hee.

Oh yes, and the other disappearing act is that I believe our Borders bookstores are closing their doors this weekend so I may just have to go once more.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Early Night

I’ve had a couple of nights of insomnia (see what happens to me when I don’t practice my yoga) and so tonight it’s a quickie post and off to bed.

I started a new book last night, The Mistress of Nothing by Kate Pullinger, and dusted off my Kindle to read Sanctuary by Edith Wharton. Both are books who feature women who were forced to adhere to certain rules of society because of the eras they lived in.

Very different stories but both make me happy to be a woman in this day and age. A woman with choices. I can read Bitch Magazine, where red lipstick, work, vote, etc. A lot of changes still need to happen for many women all over the world but I have hopes we’ll get there one day.

Alright, more tomorrow.

Checked Out

Given how many new books I’ve been buying lately, and all the wonderful ARCs on my shelves, you’d think I’d stay far, far away from a library and I actually have for about a month but I couldn’t resist it any longer.

I had put a book on hold a couple of months ago and it finally became available so when I went to pick it up on Saturday I just couldn’t leave with only it in my book bag. I had to check out more. Here are the books I found on the new shelves:

  • The Handmade Marketplace by Kari Chapin. It’s been hard to pay attention to my online shops this year given my real work but I do love making my journals and still have dreams of selling more of them so I figure it would be good to read about how some of the big names in the DIY world made it. Get some encouragement, ideas, etc.
  • The Beauty of Humanity Movement by Camilla Gibb. I love the title and cover of this book and was going to check it out regardless of the storyline but the story does sound interesting and it is set in contemporary Vietnam, which I can’t remember reading about in recent times.
  • Life In Miniature by Linda Schlossberg. A story about mothers and daughters and I do love these kind of stories.
  • The Gordian Knot by Bernhard Schlink. Best known for The Reader, it looks like Schlink has now branched out into crime fiction. It’s been years since I read his best-selling novel but am definitely curious how this story will develop.

I had sort of wanted to hold out on my library ban a bit longer to work through more of my books but oh well. It is good to go back to the library and I’ve even put a couple of other books on hold. Good times. Let me know if you’ve read some of these and what you thought.
