Weekend Recap

butterflyHow was your weekend? Hopefully you were up to some fun. Our weekend was quite busy between running errands, chores, etc. My original plans to see some of my family members fell through but we’re working on new dates. As we didn’t have anything major going on Saturday morning we headed out to The Natural Gardener to attend a talk on Gardening for Wildlife.

Over the past couple of years we’ve made a big effort to use native plants and go with plants that are drought tolerant and low maintenance. I’ve also paid attention to what kind of plants attract bees, butterflies, etc. and so this talk was to supplement the info I had. I was happy to hear that we do have some good stuff already in our garden and I think our efforts are paying off. This summer I have seen some hummingbirds, dragonflies and butterflies in our garden. Our succulents area is doing great too.

The Natural Gardener is a wonderful nursery and we could easily spend hours there but after the talk we were ready to get a few more plants and come home to get them planted. So we bought more milkweed, Gregg’s mist flower, White mist flower and another rock rose. The rock roses are my favorites and seem to do well in our garden. We made a few changes in our backyard over the weekend. Moved some plants around hoping they’ll be better placed and took out some that just didn’t seem to be making it. Anyway, looking forward to seeing how the new plants do and hoping wildlife will enjoy the habitat.

And, yes, there was reading going on this weekend but I think I did more magazine reading than book reading. I haven’t been doing any art journaling lately so I picked up one of my Art Journaling magazines to get my creative juices flowing. I also found a new copy of Cloth Paper Scissors that I had to buy because there was an article on handmade books and working with vintage photos.

So that’s the latest from Casa Bookgirl. Hope you have a great week ahead!

Link-O-Rama

frame2Even though it was a short work week, I’m very ready for the weekend. I have a lot of stuff going on this weekend, I’ll even get a chance to see some of my family, so probably not a lot of reading will get done. So I’m going to keep this one short and just leave you with some links I hope you’ll enjoy!

We all know Andi from Estella’s Revenge and now this clever gal is opening her Etsy shop this weekend! Wrecking Ball Designs will feature stickers for planner addicts and all sorts of paper stuffs. I can’t wait to load up on some goodies!

Speaking of planners, have you seen the new Persephone Diary? What book lover wouldn’t enjoy this!

The Giller Longlist has just been announced. The Giller Prize strives to highlight the very best in Canadian fiction year after year. Have you read any of the nominees?

Add yet more books to your list this time with the 100 Must-Read Mystery & Crime Novels from Around the World. I’m happy to say I’ve read some of these but of course I’ve added many more to my TBR list.

Now for those of you who enjoy book art, check out these sculptures. I would love to see the process of how some of these were made.

Have a wonderful weekend friends and hope you read lots of great stuff!

Not For Me

Sometimes I feel like when I talk about the books I’ve read it seems I have liked or loved every book. That’s probably in part because if the book is not really working for me, I will stop reading it. Sometimes I will go back to a book I set aside if I think it may have been the right book at the wrong time but it could take a very long time for that to happen.

So this post is about two books that did not work for me. Maybe they will be something you have enjoyed or could enjoy.

happypeopleHappy People Read and Drink Coffee by Agnes Martin-Lugand. Diane seems to have a perfect life. She’s married, has a child and owns a charming book and coffee shop in Paris. Until one day her life is shattered when her husband and child die in an accident. After a year of grieving, Diane is still barely living until she decides to leave Paris behind for a small town in Ireland. There she meets Edward, her next door neighbor and while the two do not get along very well at first, they slowly form a relationship and begin to trust in love again.

This story has a wonderful setting and tackles some very serious and emotional issues but what made this difficult to enjoy were the characters. I understand that both are going through awful situations but they were so unlikeable. They were constantly arguing and were often just mean. Frankly, I wasn’t sure what attracted them to each other. I believe there is a sequel to this story but I don’t see myself picking that one up.

littleparisThe Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George. Monsieur Perdu owns a floating bookshop in a barge on the Seine in Paris. He believes he can find the perfect book for whatever ails his readers. Unfortunately he can’t find the one book that would make his heartache go away.

Another title with featuring Paris and books, what is not to love right? Well, unfortunately this is a story I couldn’t finish. It just seemed so forced and I just couldn’t get over one of the major points in the book. The fact that Monsieur Perdu has not gotten over the lover who left him 20 years ago. He’s completely shut himself off from experiencing love again. So another character I had a hard time understanding.

Both of these books are translations so I wonder if something was lost in the translation.

Anyway, what do you think? Have you read these and was your reading experience totally different than mine? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
