On the Nightstand

I mentioned in my last post that my reading has been a bit on the slow side but I do have a good variety of books keeping me busy at the moment and I wanted to chat about those for a bit.

First is Seeing People Off by Jana Beňová. This is a short novel but it feels like there is a lot going on as it is mainly about the experiences of Elza and Ian, a young couple living in an apartment complex outside of Bratislava. There are odd neighbors, and lots of noises. The couple feels trapped in their neighborhood but at the same time they seem to just waste their time in cafes. Will definitely be curious to see how this one develops.

Next up is The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield. As part of the Classics Spin I meant to read The Garden Party but what I didn’t realize was that it was a short story. I did read it and loved it but now I want to read the other stories in the collection so that’s why this one is on my nightstand.

This morning I started The Surveyors by Mary Jo Salter. Oddly enough one of the poems is titled Bratislava. What are the chances of Bratislava coming up in two of my current reads? I love it when there are little synchronicities in our reading. Anyway, this collection of poems is really enjoyable and feels easy to connect to.

Finally, my evening read (not pictured because it’s on my Kindle) is The Child by Fiona Barton and it’s the story of an old house being demolished and what is found underneath. I’m still very much in the early stages of this thriller but I’m in. If I remember correctly this one has been a favorite around the blogosphere right?

Let me know if you’ve hard of some of these, or read them, and what you think.

Catching Up

Hello everyone! I hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend. It was a quiet one around here and nothing wrong with that. I got a chance to pick up some pretty papers at JoAnns. I know, I don’t need to be buying more paper but I can’t resist sometimes. I did quite a bit of reading for my HR coursework and I also managed to finish a book. My fun reading seems to be going at a snail’s pace recently but I’ve got some good books on the nightstand so I’m happy about that.

We were going to go to the annual Spring plant flower sale at the Wildflower Center but a lot of stuff is coming back from last year’s planting efforts so we decided to wait and see how things look later in the Fall and maybe we’ll catch the sale that happens at that time.

You can see lots of color in our backyard. The mini roses towards the back (we’ve had those for several years) are blooming and I’m loving the yellow Coreopsis flowers. Unfortunately I think our Mexican Butterfly Weed didn’t make it through the cold temps we had earlier this year. Bummer. On the other side of the yard is our succulents area and that is looking great too.

On the television front, we really want to catch up with the newest season of Bosch but we are waiting until we can finish Fortitude or otherwise we’ll just do a binge watch of Bosch and forget about anything else. I am also interested in The Terror based on the Dan Simmons novel (which I have not read) but being that it’s also an arctic setting then I think we’ll save that for the summer when I know we’ll be wishing we were in the arctic! Ha.

That’s about it around here lately. I hope you have a great start to the week and more book talk soon!

The Girl I Used to Be

“I’d just been accepted by London University and would be there within a month. Whenever I hear that song now, it takes me straight back there, to that taxi ride to Alex’s house. It’s as though I am that girl, the girl I used to be. But I’m not.”

Fifteen years ago Gemma was excited about the possibilities the world had to offer but the events of the graduation party changed her. She had a rough time putting her life back together but now runs her own real estate business, is married and has a little boy. All should be good but lots of little things are starting to take their toll.

Her business, while it makes her happy and she feels successful, really does take a lot of time away from her family. She often catches herself feeling resentful of the time her stay-at-home husband spends with their son, Rory. She’s glad Rory is being taken care of by her husband but she thought the plan was for Joe to eventually find a job. Now he’s even talking about moving to Dublin to be closer to his family but no plans of finding work.

When she’s not worried about her home life, the success of her agency keeps her awake at night. Houses and apartment rentals aren’t moving very fast and she has commitments to her employees as well. Life of a small business owner is definitely stressful but when she has a training conference to attend in London she’s excited to think about a night at the hotel, getting some sleep and being away from it all.

At the bar before the conference Gemma runs into a client she was trying to find a house for. She decides to treat him to dinner but after drinks and stumbling back to her room, things are a bit fuzzy in her mind. All she knows is she can’t wait to get back home to her husband and son and put everything behind her but that’s going to be hard to do when she starts receiving incriminating messages and photos.

Gemma is going out of her mind and she just wants everything to stop. She wants things to go back to the way they were but first she has to get to the bottom of things.

This was a very suspenseful thriller. I loved how real Gemma’s worries seemed about work and life. She was the everyday woman trying to keep up with children, bills, work, chores, and marriage. So you couldn’t fault her for wanting one evening for a bit of fun unfortunately her decisions are going to have some serious consequences.

I haven’t read this author before but now I want to go and check out some of her earlier books.
