A Couple of Finds

“He never went out without a book under his arm, and he often came back with two.” Victor Hugo, Les Misérables.

I think a lot of us can probably relate to that quote right? Recently I went out to a little cafe for a treat to go with one of my current reads, The Widows of Malabar Hill. After I decided to go do a bit of thrifting and book browsing. I needed to clear my head of all the to-do’s and just have some fun.

So at a local thrift store I found The Girl Scouts in Beechwood Forest by Margaret Vandercook. It’s a 1921 edition, not in mint condition, but still quite nice. All pages are included even if there is some writing on some. This was a Christmas gift to someone according to the dedication on the inside cover. Not sure yet if I’ll use it as an altered journal or junk journal. Or maybe it’ll just look pretty on the shelves.

I also went to Barnes & Noble over the weekend and got the latest edition of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine. I haven’t started it yet but I mainly got it for the articles by Rae Missigman, a mixed media artist, and Ali Manning, a bookbinder. Can’t wait to spend some quality time with this magazine.

So what new books/magazines have you found recently?

Link-O-Rama

Good morning from a very rainy day in Austin! I need to focus on some studying today and a few other projects so I’ll make this one quick and leave you with some fun links to check out:

Did you know that May 12 is World Collage Day? I’ll have to remember to share a pic of some of my mixed media projects then but in the meantime, I’m thinking about getting this magazine. I bet it’s one I’d look through time and again.

If collaging isn’t your thing but you enjoy scrapbooking then check out these wonderful, literary themed scrapbook papers, rubber stamps and washi tapes. I may have to get a few items.

Also, I found this interesting story on the history of scrapbooking. I would love to find a vintage scrapbook during one of my thrifting explorations.

But, if Instagram is more your style then here are links on 5 Favorite Literary Instas. I love the Book Bento Box and may have to try my hand at some pictures like that.

Last but not least, if you enjoy comic books remember that Saturday is Free Comic Book Day.You can check your zip code in the locator to find a participating shop in your area.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Hello Stranger

“Carrying her leather doctor’s bag in her right hand and a hickory cane with the other, Garrett continued to walk at a brisk pace. Her gaze took in every detail of the environment. The East London parish of Clerkenwell was not a place to be careless.”

Hello Stranger

If you’ve been reading Lisa Kleypas series of The Ravenels, then you’ll have encountered Dr. Garrett Gibson before as she was introduced in previous books. Now it’s time to tell the story of the only female doctor in London. She has a busy practice, friends and family but perhaps she should start thinking about her heart.

After she receives help in fending off some attackers by Ethan Ransom one evening on her way, she accepts Ethan’s proposal to teach her some self defense tricks. Ethan, who’s been keeping an eye on the lovely doctor for quite some time, only put him at risk for falling in love.

For Garrett everything seems quite clear, why not enjoy Ethan’s company but Ethan doesn’t want to bring Garrett to close into his life for putting her in danger after all he is a spy and his current assignment will have some serious repercussions but fate keeps putting these two together time and again.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of Lisa Kleypas’ books before and while I liked the characters in this one, it wasn’t my favorite. I found Ethan’s story a bit convoluted, or his work and the political intrigue, so that sometimes took away from my enjoyment. I have not read any of the others in this series but I will be looking for them as we got glimpses of some of the other “Ravenel” characters and I would love to know their stories.
