The Child

“Standing in front of the microwave, watching the pizza revolve and bubble, I wonder for the millionth time if he’ll leave me. He should have done years ago. I would have if I’d been in his place, having to deal with my stuff, my worries, on a daily basis. But he shows no sign of packing his bags. Instead he hovers over me like an anxious parent, protecting me from harm.”

Kate Waters is journalist looking for the next big scoop when she reads about a recent construction site in London. While the workers were doing the renovations they find the skeletal remains of a baby. Immediately Kate wants to know more and thinks that this could be a big story.

With the help, or hindrance, of a new intern Kate meets with several of the construction workers and starts to piece together what could have happened to the baby.  There are several other women who’ve read this story and who think they may know who the truth.

As Kate investigates the past of the building and tries to connect with the people that may have lived in the area or have children missing she encounters Angela. She is a homemaker who has lived with the guilt of having left her baby in her cot at the hospital while she took a shower. In that small instance while she left her alone her baby went missing.

There are alternating narratives which lead you down the path of different conclusions. I did not see how everything was going to come together until well into the story so I really liked being kept in suspense. I thought Kate was a believable character and liked how she came to rely on her intern and together they worked together to find the truth. A very enjoyable read.

Library Haul

One of the best things about visiting the library is finding something you weren’t even looking for right? The library closest to me is not too large but every once in a while they surprise me with a new display/installation and on my latest visit this was no exception. They had a small display of local artist Daniel Arredondo’s impressionist landscapes on cigar boxes. I just love how the library is a window to so many other things. It’s great isn’t it?

Anyway, I did pick up a few books on my visit. One was a hold for my upcoming book group meet up but the others were book I thought would be good reads.

Murder on the Quai by Cara Black. This is the book for my mystery group. I read one of in this series before and I didn’t enjoy it too much but I’m open to checking this one out and seeing if I change my mind. This is the 15th book in the series and of course it is set in Paris so at least I’m sure I’ll enjoy the setting.

The Awakening of Miss Prim by Natalia Sanmartin Fenollera. In this #1 international bestseller, a young woman leaves everything behind to work as a librarian in a remote French village, where she finds her outlook on life and love challenged in every way. This sounds delightful doesn’t it?

The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny. It’s been years since I caught up with Inspector Gamache and his team so I’m looking forward to this one. This is the eighth book in the series and while the last couple of books weren’t my favorite I do like Gamache a lot and hope that this book will reel me back into the series.

Where the Dead Sit Talking by Brandon Hobson. Set in rural Oklahoma during the late 1980s, this is a startling, authentically voiced and lyrically written Native American coming-of-age story. I am really looking forward to this one.

Let me know if you’ve read any of these and what you think. Also, have you been to your library recently? What did you get?

This & That

Hope you’ve all had a great weekend. I didn’t realize it had been almost a month since we last went to the bookstore. Yikes. So needless to say, that’s where we spent our afternoon on Saturday.

I was hoping to find the latest issue of Flow Magazine but didn’t see it but I did find the recent Somerset issue and so glad I did because I read a great article about artist Melissa Combs and that’s led me to look into a new technique – Pulled paint technique. I have sort of tried this before, mainly at art journal workshops, but I didn’t realize this is what it was called or the history of it. So hopefully some fun collage work is in my future.

Also found out that the magazine Where Women Create is no more but a new publication by Stampington is coming out in August which is going to be somewhat similar this time it’s called In Her Studio. I can’t wait to check it out so I better mark my calendar so I don’t miss the issue.

And, on another note, I recently read a Walt Whitman poem, Miracles, which just blew me away. I am not very familiar with Whitman’s works so this has sparked my interest no doubt. I’ve already printed the poem out and added it to my poetry journal.

I also recently visited the library to pick up a hold and a got a few other books so I’ll tell you about them in my next post. Did you read a good book or magazine this weekend?
