After Nightfall

“Lauren is flirting with my fiancé over the dinner I spent hours preparing. She gets this way when she’s had too  much wine. I’m not far behind her; I’m already into my second glass of merlot. I’m not even sure why I’m drinking – I usually don’t. But tonight, Nathan and I are planning to announce our engagement.”

The celebratory dinner should have been just that, a time to celebrate her upcoming wedding but Marissa’s enthusiasm is diminished by some of the actions of her guests and her own growing sense of unease at having brought her best friend back into her life.

The dinner is fraught with tension from all of the guests, snide remarks, unreadable looks and Marissa lays all fault with her friend after all Lauren has always been selfish and self-centered. The next morning on her walk to the beach she finds Lauren’s body, bruised and lifeless along the shore.

Marissa recalls details from the previous evening that make her question those around her and their intentions. Who could have wanted to hurt Lauren and who would have the most to gain by her death? In addition Marissa is now unsure of her own feelings towards her fiancé but when she questions him she doesn’t know if she is wanting to hear the truth.

I thought this novel started out with a lot of great tension, and I could clearly envision a dinner gone awry. As the novel progresses everyone is a suspect and the author provides the reader just enough background to go from believing it is one suspect to doubting yourself and moving on to the next. I found this to be a good thriller and will look for more by this author.

Currently Reading

My reading has definitely picked up and that’s a good feeling. Not that I’m whizzing through books but I feel like I’m making progress so I thought I’d share a bit about the books I’m currently reading.

Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo is the first book in the series featuring a former Amish woman who left the life and is now the Chief of Police of Painters Mill. Kate Burkholder may be strong but she doesn’t have a lot of experience under her belt and now she is facing a case that could easily break her burgeoning career. Great tension and character development. I think this is a series I will easily get hooked on and lucky for me there are already 14 books in the series.

For my next book I’m giving audiobooks another chance. This time with the Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan. Anthony Perdew collected lost things – A blue button found on the street, a broken bracelet, a hairclip. His goal was to reunite the lost items to their owners but he has a room full of items waiting to be reunited and in the meantime he’s written stories about the items and imagined why they were lost. I was a bit lost at first because it’s not just Anthony narrating but sometimes the story goes back and forth in time and between other characters (those who have lost the items). I’m about half way through this one.

Little Big Love by Katy Regan is the story of a young boy, Zac, who is determined to find his dad. All he knows is that he left his mom when he was a baby. He knows his mom loved him but he also knows his grandparents don’t like talking about him. With the help of his best friend they are going to collect information and find him. Very sweet. I’m getting close to the end and still no dad in sight so I’m so curious what’s going to happen.

I’m trying not to add any other books so I can focus on these for now but you know I do love starting a new book. So have you read any of these?

Brunch and Books

I had a great time catching up with one of my best friends who was in town today. She only had a bit of free time but we made the most of it. We decided on brunch at the library. Our new public library has a wonderful cafe – the Cookbook Cafe and it’s finally open so we wanted to check it out.

Over a delicious meal (I had the breakfast grilled cheese) and a cappuccino, we caught up on the latest is on our lives and then we wandered around the floors of the library.

I have got to go over there more often. The downtown library is not too far from my home but I have a smaller branch closer to me that I visit. I may have to make it a point to go to our main library every couple of months to check it out. Not only that but their gift shop is now open too.

I couldn’t resist picking up a set of pin back buttons for my book bags. Aren’t these cute? I especially like the Night Time Reader one as I do love staying up late reading. You can check out some of the artist’s other work on his website.

There were a ton of other cute bookish gift items and some even from local artists. I may need to reach out to the gift shop and see if they want to carry some of my journals! That would be so freaking cool if they would. A girl can dream right?

Anyway, that is the scoop for the weekend. I hope you all had some fun or at least a relaxing one. Now I better get to sleep because Monday morning will get here soon enough right. Have a great start of the week!
