Library Visit

My library visit this weekend was a bit of a bust. I went to pick up a hold and was thinking I’d browse the new book shelves but I saw that the new books shelves were reduced to a small section. It seems that the “holds” section has overpowered the new books. What?

When I went to check out I asked the librarian and she must have been having a bad day because all she said was, “I guess all the new books are checked out.” I wanted to point out that no, they just moved the new books to another much smaller area. Oh well, it’s not like I need to browse new books at the library as I have so many books to be read but it was just a bit of a bummer to see that and to get that response. Maybe I’ll just find another library to go visit as I do have a couple of other branches somewhat near me.

So all I got was my hold, The Temptation of Forgiveness by Donna Leon. I won’t be making it to my September book group meeting but this is the book we’re discussing in October. I figure I might as well as get it now and be ready. I’ve read several of the Commissario Brunetti books and really like the main character so I’m looking forward to seeing what case the Commissario will be involved with in this installment.

I noticed there’s a wonderful map on the end papers (what’s up with the library sticker though?) but I also was surprised to read that this is the 27th installment. Yikes. The last book I read in this series was #5 so I guess I’m way behind. Now I really wonder what’s in store for me when I read this book.

Anyway, hope you all had a great weekend! Let me know if you’ve picked up anything at the library recently.

Currently Reading

When September began I was reading three books and those are all now on the backburner. I haven’t forgotten about them but none of them were quite grabbing my attention. The only one that I was really into was my audiobook, The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter, but the loan ended before I finished it. Now I’ll have to wait until the book is available again.

Anyway, I decided to move on and am so glad I have because I’ve found two books that I’m really enjoying and wish I could devote even more time too.

First, The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons. I had heard about this one for a while and thought it would be a good R.I.P. read after all a spooky house? I’m all in it and yes, it’s creepy so far even if I’m only 75 pages in.

The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo is my current audiobook and I am really enjoying this on my commute. It’s about two college students who meet during 9/11 and how their paths continue to cross throughout the years. Gabe and Lucy love each other but will that be enough to keep them together?  I think this will be a good love story.

The other two books I’m still reading are The Cutting Edge by Jeffery Deaver and America is not the Heart by Elaine Castillo. I’m not ready to call it quits on these as there is something about each one that is still keeping me interested but it may take me a bit to finish them.

I hope you all have a great book to look forward to this weekend. I’m hoping to finish at least one of these and I think I see a library visit in store for me this weekend. Happy weekend you guys and more book talk soon!

Little Big Love

“So I’d already written to my dad on New Year’s Eve, but deciding to look for him only started, really, the night of my mum’s Date from Hell.”

Little Big Love

Zac Hutchinson is a 10-year-old with a big heart. He loves to collect facts, he enjoys spending time with his grandparents and most of all he knows his mom works hard to provide as best as she can for them. One evening though when his mom returns home from a disastrous date, he overhears her say that his dad was her great love.

Juliet and Liam were young and in love but soon after Zac’s birth a terrible moment puts Liam at odds with Juliet’s family. He tries to make amends but the pain is too much for the family and he leaves.

Zac doesn’t know much about his dad or why he left but now he is determined to find him. With the help of his best friend, Teagan, they try to find as many clues as possible that will lead them to Liam. All the while, Zac is trying to be strong and not let some of the bullies in his school get to him and most importantly, not tell his mom about any of this so she won’t worry.

This was such a sweet and tender book. I found Zac delightful and I felt sorry for Juliet who was really was trying to do the best thing for her son but missed a lot of big clues about how Zac was being treated at school. There are other important people in Zac’s life and we get a glimpse at their stories too but the one that I especially liked was Teagan’s story. She has her own complicated life and you can’t help but wonder how everything will turn out for her.

Will Zac find Liam and will the family be able to finally come together? This is one book where I would love to see a sequel featuring Zac and Teagan as young adults. I want to know that they have found many happy moments in their lives and that their adventurous spirits will lead them to even greater things.
