Three Books

I have some new books I’m excited about and wanted to share those titles with you.

Code Girls by Liza Mundy. The award-winning national bestseller about the American women who secretly served as codebreakers during World War II. I know a lot of you have read and raved about this one so I look forward to this book on such an important role in history which was never mentioned in any of my high school or college history book.

Death of a Rainmaker by Laurie Loewenstein. This new mystery series is set in Vermillion, Okla., in 1935. The main characters will be dealing with a murder during the devastating period of the Dust Bowl.

Vancouver Noir edited by Sam Wiebe. Akashic Books continues its award-winning series of original noir anthologies. I’ve enjoyed several of these anthologies and having traveled to Vancouver a couple of years ago, I’m really excited to read about a place I would love to visit again. For now I guess it will just be via my armchair travel with this book.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and more book talk soon!

Library Visit

Remember I recently complained about a library visit and how there were no new books? Well, they showed me this time! Not only were there new books but books from authors I really enjoy. So my intention was only to go and return a book and I ended up walking away with four new books.

Here’s what I got:

Natural Causes by Barbara Ehrenreich. From the book jacket: “We may buy expensive anti-aging products or cosmetic surgery, get preventive screenings and eat more kale, or throw ourselves into meditation and spirituality. But all these things offer only the illusion of control. How to live well, even joyously, while accepting our mortality — that is the vitally important philosophical challenge of this book.”

To Die But Once by Jacqueline Winspear. How did I miss this latest installment? Maisie Dobbs is one of my favorite series so I can’t wait to see what Maisie will be investigating this time. The book is set in the Spring of 1940 during the months following Britain’s declaration of war on Germany.

The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware. I’ve enjoyed a couple of Ware’s books so I had to check this one out. From the book jacket: “On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.”

The Other Lady Vanishes by Amanda Quick. When I want to read a bit of romance, Amanda Quick’s books are my go-tos because her female characters are intelligent and strong. I’m used to her historical novels being set in the 1800s but this time she’s set her story in the glamorous era of the 1930s. Looking forward to this one.

A lot of books and not enough free time. Anyway, which book would you start with and/or have you read any of these?

Tuesday Intro

Another fun meme I haven’t done in a while is, First Chapter, First Paragraph Tuesday Intros. Vicki, from I’d Rather Be At The Beach, hosts this one and it’s all about posting a bit from a book that you are reading or planning to read.

“The appeal of this legend should not surprise me. After all, why should the story – my story – not be one for the ages? It has everything that a grand, epic tale should have, even if the details have been lost: a romance between a handsome hero and a beautiful heroine, a jealous rival, loyal friendship, music, ghosts and demons, magic, and murder most foul.

I have let the wounds from that long-ago time heal, letting the ghosts die and lie in their graves. I had to. It was the only way I could go on.

And yet I will tell the tale all the same, because I would have the true story known at last. For all these years, the truth has been known only to two souls living. But I have kept it inside long enough. Now you, too, will know the truth.”

The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel: A Story of Sleepy Hollow
By Alyssa Palombo

What do you think? I haven’t started this one yet but I’ve decided it’s going to be my third selection for the R.I.P. reading challenge.

I’ve had some great success so far with my R.I.P. reads and I hope this one won’t disappoint.
