I hope you all had a very nice weekend. I had to do a bit of work over the weekend but we relaxed watching The Five and more of House Hunters International. We imagine living in other countries and discovering new places and food. Can you tell I’m totally missing our annual travels? Right now we would be counting down the days but I guess we’ll just have to wait until next year.
On the book front, I finished We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. You guys have to read this! Even though you know what is going to happen it is still disturbing. I didn’t quite know what I wanted to read after but I made the right choice by starting I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sanchez, which I recently purchased. So far, this is turning out to be a winner.
Also, while scrolling Instagram I heard about #BlackoutBestsellerlist. Amistad Books, the oldest publisher dedicated to publishing multicultural voices, is encouraging readers to purchase two books by black writers during the week of Sunday, June 14 through Saturday, June 20th. The goal is to Blackout bestseller lists with Black voices. If possible, also don’t forget to support Black-owned bookstores. I already placed an order with Black Pearl Books.
Finally, what are some summer reading events you’re participating in this summer? I know Women in Translation (WIT) is in August but are there other read-a-longs or events you are looking forward to? I know what you mean about missing your travels! We don’t usually go during the summer months (too crowded), but we missed all of March and April and now may not go anywhere until September. That is, if things feel safe enough to venture out. With the RV, it shouldn’t be too much of a risk, but the numbers are going up in Oregon, so we’ll see.
How did you like The Five? I think we enjoyed The Stranger better, but they were both pretty good. Now we’re watching a mindless show called New Tricks. It’s not too dated, but it reminds me a bit of Murder in Paradise. Just a little silly at times.
Both of your books sounds great. I’m listening to The Warmth of Other Suns and reading The Nickel Boys. They’re both very good, but I know I’ll be ready for something a little lighter when I finish. I’m joining in on the 20 Books of Summer challenge, so I have a shelf devoted to my reading plans for the next few months. I think I have some good choices, so I’m looking forward to tackling some of these from my own stacks. I haven’t been to the library since January!!

I started We Need to Talk About Kevin on audio years ago, hated the narrator, and quit. Must be others did, too, because they recorded a new version with a different narrator. Never did get around to trying it again, but I’ll put it back on my list. A couple bloggers I follow really enjoyed I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter… sound like one I’d enjoy, too. I like to imagine the same thing when I watch House Hunters International. And sometimes the regular House Hunters–imagining what it would be like to live anywhere else. I’m always so surprised how much cheaper house prices are almost everywhere else than Southern California. LOL
I have a copy of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter I purchased in a subscription box a couple years ago, but haven’t yet read it. You make me want to pull it off the shelf and read it now. I am glad you are enjoying it! I loved We Need to Talk About Kevin. Such a disturbing but thought provoking book.
