It’s time for another, First Chapter, First Paragraph Tuesday Intros. Thank you to Yvonne, from Socrates’ Book Reviews who hosts this meme. As a reminder this is your chance to post a bit from a book that you are reading or planning to read. My entry comes from a book I started reading last week.
“So now I’m home – what passes for it. Of course you’ve never been here, so allow me to describe it for you. You’d be taken aback. Not least because I’ve opted to remain in Gladstone, after kicking up such a fuss about moving to the suburbs in the first place. But I felt I should stay within driving distance of Kevin. Besides, much as I crave anonymity, it’s not that I want my neighbors to forget who I am; I want to, and that is not an opportunity any town affords. This is the one place in the world where the ramifications of my life are fully felt, and it’s far less important to me to be liked these days than to be understood.”
We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver
Did you guess the intro? Have you read it or seen the movie?
This book has been on my shelf since 2008! Given that it was so popular when it came out and went on win the Orange Prize, I put it aside thinking I’d get to it after all the buzz died down. I guess somehow it got lost in my stacks but the wait has been worth it.
I originally had written this post for last week so I’m now much further into the story. I love the way the author describes the mother’s feelings and the portrait of someone being in the middle of such a tragedy. Will I see the movie after I’m done with the book? Not sure.
Let me know if you’ve read this or if it’s on your TBR stack.
