Happy weekend everyone. I’m back for another Sunday Salon. My postings may be a bit hit or miss for this (or my blog in general it seems like!) but thank you to Deb at Readerbuzz for hosting the Sunday Salon and bringing us together to chat.
What I’m watching: We bought the DVD of the 8th and final season of Spiral. This is a French police procedural and legal drama which we’ve really enjoyed and last night we started it. It’s got a great cast and I love that although it is set in Paris, you don’t get a romanticized view of the city. Instead you see the characters dealing with issues of immigration, money-laundering, etc. It’s really good.
What I’m listening: As I’m participating in R.I.P., I decided to listen to some spooky tales and I’ve been listening to a couple of episodes of Lore. Why do I insist on listening to these at night?
What I’m reading: I am really enjoying The Fortnight in September by R.C. Sherriff. The Stevens family sets for their yearly vacation at the coast of England. I love how excited they are about their vacation and how much they prepare to start it. I wish I was going to the seaside myself.
What I’m making: Journal entries. I’ve mentioned before that I tend to keep several journals at once. I don’t necessarily write in my journals every day or every week sometimes but one of my journals had been a bit neglected all summer but I’ve been adding some entries this week. This is one where I use stickers, washi tapes, magazine cutouts, etc. It’s almost like a scrapbook for me.
What made me smile this week: I found out about a new indie bookstore, Reverie Books! This small bookstore is located in south Austin and not too far from my home so I was super excited. We went for a visit yesterday and was delighted at their selection. It may be small but they have shelves dedicated to poetry, fiction, LGBTQ, memoirs, etc. And, they also have a selection of gift items. It was a bit crowded so we didn’t stay too long but I did purchase Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. Will definitely be back!

I haven’t’ heard of Spiral before, enjoy it. Yay for R.I.P.,, I am going to re-read Interview With the Vampire for it. The indie bookstore sounds wonderful also. Happy reading this week!

Reverie Books sounds like a fun place to browse. I plan to read Hamnet in the next month or two since we’re discussing it in my book club at the end of the year. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it! I have not heard about The Fortnight in September, but it looks like one my mom and I would both enjoy. I’m adding it to my Christmas shopping list… like JoAnn, I love the cover for the book.

I loved the post on the Indie bookstore, with Hamnet by a cup of coffee, which I believe I saw on Instagram. Those stores are so much more charming than any Barnes and Noble! Hamnet was one of my. Favorite reads last year. I do hope you like it, too.
I wish a bunch of us, or just you and I, could sit together to talk about journaling some day. I have always kept a journal, since I could write, and now I’m finding myself with a traveler’s notebook AND a bullet journal type of thing. It feels a bit overwhelming to have several at once…not so many details of my life are that important. I’d love to hear how you use your several journals. I could use mine for commonplace books, scripture writing, notes on what I’ve read, etc. Too much!☺️
Yay for the bookstore visit! Sadly, I haven’t been to one for a while due to the recent spike cases. I miss visiting them so much but I do visit the library sometimes and I’m glad it’s not that far away from my house. Hope you’ve a great week, Iliana!
Spiral sounds like a show that would intersect between the interests of my husband (mysteries) and me (Paris). I will see what we think.
When I recently read The Glossary of Joy, I ran across a word that speaks to the happiness people get from doing (or reading or watching) something scary. That explains RIP to me. And why you especially tend to read scary things at night!
Fortnight in September sounds like my sort of story. I will look for it.
Normally at this time of year I’d be making plans for October’s Texas Book Festival, and a stop at Reverie Books would be something I’d definitely include. But not this year, sadly. I will keep Reverie Books on my list for my next visit to Austin. It’s always good news to learn of a new bookstore.

A new bookstore to enjoy! Haven’t heard of Spiral, but I’ve enjoyed a couple French mysteries on Netflix or Amazon Prime. They were tense and atmospheric. I’ll give this one a look.
It always feels great when you find a new close-to-me bookstore right? I’m always looking for one I haven’t been to yet. I don’t think I could read or listen to spooky books just before bedtime. I can watch on-screen but that’s about. You are braver than I am!
