Is it the weekend yet? I am starting the countdown to Friday afternoon. I’ve had some super busy days at work and am ready to relax and spend time with the following stacks:
Books to Finish
- Queen of the Underworld by Gail Godwin. It’s taken me a bit longer than I expected to finish this book. Not because of the book itself, it’s been such a pleasant read. Problem is, it’s my lunch hour book and I’ve skipped lunch a couple of times this week so I haven’t been able to devote a lot of time to it but I am getting closer to the end. I can’t wait to see what happens to Emma.
- Deadman’s Switch by Barbara Seranella. A mystery where the sleuth is a crisis management expert. There’s a large cast of characters and I’m suspicious of most of them.
- The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu. A trio of immigrant friends making sense of life in America. I loved this part: “In my monthly letters and phone calls to my mother and brother in Ethiopia, I tell them only that I own my own business, and that business is okay… I send them money once every few months when I can afford to, even though I know they don’t need it. I do it because I am in America, and because sending money home is supposed to be the consolation prize for not being home.”
Books to Start
- The Dancing Girls of Lahore by Louise Brown. The April selection for one of my book groups.
- Lady Susan by Jane Austen. Another book group selection.
I must be dreaming if I think I can attempt this reading plan over the weekend. Plus, not to mention that there are always other books that manage to cut in on the carefully planned stacks. We’ll see how this goes. I hope you have some great reading plans for your weekend!

I can’t wait for the weekend either! It’s good to have reading goals–I’d love to finish something, but I have a feeling I won’t. I do plan on starting Lady Susan. Enjoy your weekend!
But the dreaming is the best part. I always have great plans for what I’m going to read over the weekened or a holiday and it’s the planning that I really enjoy. I want to finish William Boyd’s ‘Restless’ this wekend. A man should not be able to write so well from the woman’s perspective. And then I have the latest Elizabeth George detective novel to start. Given the size of that book, that should keep me out of mischief till Monday morning.
I’m also not working this weekend, so should have plenty of reading time.
I’ve got to an interesting stage in Ngaio Marsh’s book False Scent, where the victim has just been killed. (About 1/3rd through). I should be able to finish that, continue my other 2 current reads and maybe start a new book. (He says ambitiously …..)
So glad the weekend is almost here. I’ll be starting Lady Susan as well. and you quote from The Beautiful Things has me very interested in it.
I haven’t done nearly enough reading this week, so I’m looking forward to some quiet time—with a book—in my favorite reading spots. I’d like to finish Joe Miller’s “Cross-X” (his travels with an Urban Debate League team from Kansas City that takes me right back to my days as a champ debater), and I’d like to start “The Brief History of the Dead” and a mystery of some sort, as well as read more “Eat, Pray, Love.” That’s not too ambitious, is it?
If it rains this weekend, you can read everything! But, if you go out to enjoy the nice spring weather, I don’t blame you. The summers in TX are brutal, so I know what you will be doing then!
I simply can’t read fast enough. Sigh.

Well girl…I wouldn’t be surprised if you get through those and start some new ones! The Dancing Girls of Lahore is something I still need to pick up but for some reason, I am not super excited about this book. I think it is my thirst for complete fluff right now. Oh, at HP Books I managed to find a BBC production of Northanger Abbey! I will probably watch it this weekend and send it your way afterwards… =) I thought that was pretty cool since you just mentioned it…
