Poetry Month

Today is the last day of National Poetry Month but that doesn’t mean I won’t be seeking more poetry in my life. I go through phases and there are times when I tend to read more poetry but I can say that I love discovering new poets and collections.

I didn’t get a chance to go to a poetry reading as I had hoped, mainly because I was sick when one of the events I was looking forward to was happening, but hopefully next year I can make it. But, I have been receiving a daily dose of poems thanks to the Knopf Poem-A-Day emails and that means I’ve added some new poems to my poetry journal.

In particular the ones I liked were: “Shine” by Jonathan Galassi which begs to be read out loud, “In praise of joe” by Marge Piercy which is a fun poem in praise of coffee and “Correspondences” by Anne Michaels and Bernice Eisenstein which evokes such a beautiful imagery.

Now here is a snippet from “Reader” by Billy Collins, whose latest book I’m enjoying greatly.

Looker, gazer, skimmer, skipper,
thumb-licking page turner, peruser,
you getting your print-fix for the day,
pencil-chewer, note taker, marginalianist
with your checks and X’s
first-timer or revisiter,
browser, speedster, English major,
flight-ready girl, melancholy boy,
invisible companion, thief, blind date, perfect stranger —

How about you, did you discover new poets/poems this month?
