Once Upon a Time

Carl V. has announced the Once Upon a Time Challenge and I’m excited to say, “Count me in!” I don’t typically read books in this genre so I think this will be a great way to break out of my reading comfort zone. Granted, with my track record in previous challenges I don’t know if I’ll complete it but I’ll try. Can’t wait to see who all joins in. Here is my list:

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. This is science-fiction fantasy in the guise of an old-fashioned Victorian novel. Well you know how much I love Victorian settings so this should be good for me right. I’ve been meaning to read Connie Willis forever so now would be a good time.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. This is another book that has been sitting on the shelf for a while and if I remember correctly Stefanie recommended this to me a long time ago.

Storm Front by Jim Butcher. SciFiChick has convinced me that I need to read this book. This is the first in the series of a private detective who also happens to be wizard. I love mysteries so a bit of magic can’t hurt.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. According to the reviews, this book combines folklore, fantasy, and a fistful of high-tech funk in an outrageously devilish book that could well do for fairies what Harry Potter has done for wizardry. My husband recommended this one so it better be good. heh.

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. This is a hopeful tale set in a dystopian future United States of walled cities, disease, fires, and madness. Okay that sounds a bit scary but I’m hanging on that “hopeful” mentioned.

There you have it. And, in case you are wondering all of the books come from my shelves so this should help me in my personal quest to somehow make the stacks more manageable. Yeah, right. Anyway, thank you Carl V. for giving us a new reading challenge. I look forward to it!

Films & Books

My weekend reading plans didn’t go exactly as planned but I did make some progress and I even got to go to the AFI Film festival with Christine. We saw a very cute movie and we are planning to catch another film later this week.

On the book front, I finished Deadman’s Switch by Barbara Seranella and Queen of the Underworld by Gail Godwin. Both were really enjoyable and I promise reviews will be up soon. I actually have several I need to upload so I hope to get to all of those this week.

Finally, I did some weeding of the bookshelves and added a few more books to my BookMooch inventory but I couldn’t help but mooch some more too. So I should have several mooches arriving soon. Yay!

Well, off to relax and get ready for Monday.

Reading Plan

Is it the weekend yet? I am starting the countdown to Friday afternoon. I’ve had some super busy days at work and am ready to relax and spend time with the following stacks:

Books to Finish

  • Queen of the Underworld by Gail Godwin. It’s taken me a bit longer than I expected to finish this book. Not because of the book itself, it’s been such a pleasant read. Problem is, it’s my lunch hour book and I’ve skipped lunch a couple of times this week so I haven’t been able to devote a lot of time to it but I am getting closer to the end. I can’t wait to see what happens to Emma.
  • Deadman’s Switch by Barbara Seranella. A mystery where the sleuth is a crisis management expert. There’s a large cast of characters and I’m suspicious of most of them.
  • The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu. A trio of immigrant friends making sense of life in America. I loved this part: “In my monthly letters and phone calls to my mother and brother in Ethiopia, I tell them only that I own my own business, and that business is okay… I send them money once every few months when I can afford to, even though I know they don’t need it. I do it because I am in America, and because sending money home is supposed to be the consolation prize for not being home.”

Books to Start

I must be dreaming if I think I can attempt this reading plan over the weekend. Plus, not to mention that there are always other books that manage to cut in on the carefully planned stacks. We’ll see how this goes. I hope you have some great reading plans for your weekend!
