Books & TV

Okay so normally I don’t talk about television but I was over at Dark Orpheus’ blog and I saw that she posted about the new book Who’s Your TV Alter Ego? by Noah Lusky. I got an ARC of this book so I had to share what my quiz said. I went to the web site and checked out the Scooby Doo Quiz. I’m Velma: curious, analytical and maybe a little smug. Zoinks!

The book has 52 personality tests that include shows from long ago to today’s favorites. And, who doesn’t like to take a personality test right? Heh.

Speaking of television, I just found out about Book Videos TV where you can get the scoop on the story behind the story! There are a couple of videos that I’ll have to watch when I get more time but I did check out Philippa Gregory’s video. She talked a bit about the research involved for her novels and what it’s like to find someone reading one of her novels when she travels. Very neat. Of course this reminds me that I want to read another of her books.

Well enough about television for now because books are calling my name.

Bookish Style

I didn’t even tell you about one of the best things about the weekend. I got together with Christine on Friday and we were supposed to go to the Xocolatl Room for an evening of chocolate sampling and poetry. They host an open mic after 10 p.m. Seriously what could be better than that right? Unfortunately there was an event going on so there was nowhere to sit and we had to find another spot to hang out at. At least in Dallas there are lots of good places to eat so we found another good place for dessert.

So our big plans didn’t quite work out but I was one lucky girl anyway because Christine gave me a Poet-Tree, poetry on a t-shirt. Totally cute. Thanks Chica, and maybe when we finally go to the Xocolatl Room I can wear my Poet-Tree tee and fit right in. Heh.

In other Dallas related news, I just heard that the Dallas Public Library is hosting the Second International Book Fair in early July. I scanned the list of authors and don’t recognize any names but if I’m free I may just have to venture out there. What I am planning to go check out one of these days though is the Guild of Bookworkers’ 100th Anniversary Exhibition. I just know I’ll have to be pulled away from the exhibit. Oh to learn how to make some of those fabulous book structures. I cannot wait to see it.

So anyway if you are in the Dallas area there are several bookish things going on this summer. Yay.

Bookish Encounters

First, I just have to say all of you guys are the best! Thank you so much for all the super nice comments you left me. I’m sorry I didn’t comment myself and I know I haven’t been around to blog visit but I’ve been spending some time away from the computer this weekend. Sometimes that’s a good thing. I promise to catch up, and I have taken note of all the suggestions you’ve left and those which I haven’t read have gone on the famous TBR list. Oh it’s so long now.

Now the moment you’ve been waiting for…. Lesley of A Life in Books is the winner of a special handmade book! Congrats Lesley. I’m sorry I can’t give everyone a bookish prize but I’ll just have to think of more contests throughout the year. By the way, you must go visit Lesley because she’s just announced a reading challenge. There can never be enough of those!

My weekend was spent reading and hanging out with friends. I did have two bookish encounters which really made me smile this weekend. The first one was at Starbucks. I stopped for a hazelnut latte and the barrista noticed I had a book with me. She asked me if I liked to read (I guess she doesn’t know I’m Bookgirl – heh) and I said yes. She told me that I must join their book club and of course I said yes again. Seriously, what is wrong with me? I already belong to two book groups. Ah well, maybe she won’t call me to remind me because then I’ll feel guilty if I don’t go.

The second bookish encounter happened while I waited for a friend at a restaurant. I was reading, Parable of the Sower, when a girl came over because she noticed the title. She asked me if I liked the book and said she hoped so because it was an amazing read. She sat next to me and we started talking about the book for a bit and even though I haven’t finished it based on what I’ve read so far and what she said I will definitely be reading more by Octavia Butler. How nice to be able to share the love of a good book with perfect strangers right?

Anyway it was a great weekend and I am so close to finishing Parable of the Sower so I’m off to do that right now.
