Sunday Ramblings

I had such a hard time picking a new book to read this weekend. Don’t you hate it when that happens? I stared at my stacks of unread books, would pick up one only to put it back down. I still have lots of books to read for my reading challenges, and I have a lot of unread books that I am excited about reading one of these days but I just couldn’t find the right one.

Finally, I selected Don’t Look at Me Like That by Diana Athill and I think I’ve picked a good one. Here’s a blurb from the back cover: “In England half a century ago, well-brought-up young women are meant to aspire to the respectable life. Some things are not to be spoken of; some are most certainly not to be done. There are rules, conventions. Meg Bailey obeys them. She progresses from Home Counties school to un-Bohemian art college with few outwards signs of passion or frustration. Her personality is submerged in polite routines; even with her best friend, Roxane, what can’t be said looms far larger than what can. But circumstances change. Meg gets a job and moves to London. Roxane gets married to a man picked out by her mother. And then Meg does something shocking – shocking not only by the standards of her time, but by our own.”

I look forward to reading more about this shocking event.

Actually, I didn’t get a lot of reading done this weekend but that’s because I was out most of Saturday spending the day with a friend and today I did some crafting. So I need to catch up with my blog reading and my book reading.

And, most importantly Melissa won the copy of Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why. Hope you enjoy it!

Friday Fun

Today was actually one of those days when you can’t seem to get things done. I spent most of the day on the phone with the bank, insurance, etc. So I was feeling a bit out of it and to top it off I hadn’t had time for blogs and reading. Luckily the evening was saved by a visit to Borders.

I spent a good part of the evening reading magazines like Paper Crafts and Somerset Studio. I’m contemplating making our Christmas cards this year so I wanted to get some inspiration. And, I used my the little 30% Off Coupon that I’d been hanging on to for a while on Silent in the Grave.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. I’m looking forward to spending some time with a friend tomorrow.

This & That

Thanks to Eva I found out that this week is Children’s Book Week. I don’t read books for very young readers but occasionally I’ll check out some YA fiction. So, Eva’s post reminded me that I needed to tell you about Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher (link takes you to more of my thoughts).

This is a wonderful debut novel, and one that I think would be perfect for a book group discussion. This was actually an Advance Reading Copy and I’d love to share it, so if anyone is interested in this book leave me a comment and I’ll have a drawing for it. I’ll announce the winner on Monday.

Speaking of drawings and raffles, don’t forget to check out the Love of Reading online book fair. I checked out the list of books that are being raffled tomorrow and there are some good ones.

I’m off to catch up on my reading. I’m should be finishing Raven Black soon. I still can’t figure out who did it.
