Alright you guys, you do know that Persephone Reading Weekend is coming up right? Nevermind that I still haven’t finished my book from the Virago Reading week but I’m jumping in on this readalong because I have a thing for those grey covered books.
Last year I read Mariana by Monica Dickens which I didn’t love as much as I had other Persphone books mainly because I think I was expecting something a bit different. I only have three books but they all sound good to me so I thought I’d reach out to you and maybe help me decide which book to read.
- Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Lanski. A poet returns to France to trace a child lost five years before.
- Someone At A Distance by Dorothy Whipple. A tale of a destruction of a marriage.
- Good Evening Mrs. Craven by Mollie Panter-Downes. Exploring aspects of English domestic life during the war.
These all sound so good don’t they?
What about you, are you participating and have you decided what you’ll read yet?

They do all sound really good. I haven’t read any of them, but I hope you enjoy what you decide on!
I’m thinking about Little Lost Boy or Someone at a Distance for this weekend. Both sound good.
I’m not participating, but these sound awesome! On first glance, I’d go with Good Evening Mrs. Craven.
I know nothing about any of them! But even if I did, I’m not sure you’d listen since I loved Fieldwork! Ha!
I’d go with Dorothy Whipple because I have never read her before and it seems like she is getting a little surge of popularity of late. But that’s just me. I hope you enjoy whatever you choose!
I would go for Whipple because I really want to read something by her.
I have actually read all three of these. I love Whipple, but this is my least favorite of her books that I have read so far. I think the best one may be Mrs. Craven, but Little Boy Lost is a bit more visceral if that is what you are in the mood for.
I read Good Evening Mrs Craven last year and loved it!
The Dorothy Whipple caught my attention. Whatever you chose, happy reading 🙂
You really want me to choose between them?! I’ve read all three but my heart always goes with Laski … and Whipple … and Laski … and Whipple … then there’s Mollie.
Nice choices! I’d go for the Painter-Downes, although they all sound good.
Well I’ve read none of these but I’ve heard great things about Dorothy Whipple from others so I’d go for that one!
Kailana – They do don’t they!
Diane – I’m somewhat leaning towards Someone at a DIstance but gosh I just can’t decide!
Andi – Aw, c’mon play with us 🙂 Just teasing you.
Sandy – Oh no, don’t hold that against me! haha…
Stefanie – I know right? I just love the way the book was described. So dramatic!
Willa – I’m counting your vote!
Thomas at my Porch – Oh goodness, now I don’t know which one to choose. I’m glad to hear you liked all of them at least. Granted makes the job to choose even harder 🙂
Nymeth – The only reason that one may be at the bottom of my list is because it’s short stories and I really have to be in the mood for them but I’m glad to hear you gave it thumbs up 🙂
bookworm – I can’t wait to start one!
Claire – Ha,ha… Oh no, between you and Thomas you guys aren’t helping me! 😉
Dorothy W. – I know Danielle has really enjoyed Mollie’s books so that’s a plus for sure.
Kathleen – That’s the one that I think is calling my name the most but we’ll see what I end up choosing. I promise to keep you guys posted.
Tough choice! I’ve only got one Persephone and I’m kind of glad because I know exactly what I’ll be reading – The Making of a Marchioness by Hodgson Burnett.
The Whipple! Would it be your first Whipple?
I’m not participating but my vote is for Good Evening Mrs. Craven – I like the title and for whatever reason enjoy reading books about servants in and around wartime Britain. 🙂
Little Boy Lost sounds interesting! I can’t wait to see what you end up choosing! Happy reading!
I’ve only read the Mollie Panter-Downes, which I thought was wonderful, but I am sure they are all good. Usually you can’t miss with a Persephone title–have fun choosing.
Anbolyn – Have fun reading your first Persephone! I bet you’ll be in for a treat.
Verity – It would be and that’s the one I’m really leaning to the most!
Lesley – It is a wonderful title isn’t it? Have you read the Kate Morton book the House at Riverton? Has that downstairs/upstairs thing going on you might like 🙂
Vasilly – I know although it also sounds like it could be really sad! So hard to choose.
Danielle – I thought you had read the Whipple too. I remember you mentioning the Mollie Panter-Downes book. You are right, Persephones are almost always such good books.
RE: House at Riverton
Yes and I loved it! I have her third book on my shelf now, waiting for the right mood to read it.
Never heard of Persoehone before you post. Shameful really. But you have me hooked. I ordered Mrs. Craven and devoured half of it last night. I will certainly be on the lookout for these gems from now on.
