Today was one of those days where I wonder where time went. I spent most of the day on the phone with the phone company, the apartment manager, a recruiter, on and on. Needless to say, I needed some book therapy and so I went over to Half Price Books. I wasn’t planning to buy anything (who am I kidding, right?) but couldn’t pass up these deals. I spent $5. Yay, me.
Here are my finds:
- Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. I also have her latest book, American Wife, waiting for me but this one sounds a bit more interesting to me… at least right now it does.
- Love Falls by Esther Freud. Love/lust in Tuscany.
- Helpless by Barbara Gowdy. I read her story The Romantic years ago and just remembered that I wanted to read more by this author so I’m glad I found this copy.
- Blindness by Jose Saramago. I haven’t had good luck with this author before… I tried one of his books and couldn’t get into it but I’m hoping this one will lure me right in.
- The Scandal of the Season by Sophie Gee. The first thing that caught my attention was the cover. The story has masquerade balls, pretty people and scandal. This should be fun.
I’m tired so now I’m looking forward to relaxing with some books the rest of the evening.

Blindness is one of my favorite books! I hope you like it though I do have to warn you about the punctuation. There’s hardly any.
I hope Blindness will work out for you. It’s very disturbing but brings out the most beautiful (and the ugliest) of humanity.
Prep made me decide if I ever have children they will never go to boarding school. lol Those other ones sound great! And I miss Half Price bookstore-whenever I go visit my sister, it’s one of the first stops I make! 🙂
I really enjoyed both Love Falls and Prep. The rest I’d like to read myself! Great book therapy, iliana!
I love cheap books. I keep meaning to read something by Jose Saramago. Haven’t done yet.
I read Prep when it was first released. Very good book!! I have read great reviews on Blindness as well. Enjoy your books!!
I got a $60 gift card from HPB and I can’t wait to spend it! Tried to on Sunday, but the nearest one is remodeling and I couldn’t access the fiction! Horrors!
I’d say you certainly did pretty well. $5 — wow!! Enjoy your finds.
I have the same problem with Saramago, and sadly Blindness wasn’t any different. I hope you have more luck than me!
$5 for all those books is a great deal 🙂
Vasilly – I’m warned! 🙂 Hmm, I do find that can be distracting but I’ll give it a go!
Matt – That makes it sound very fascinating! I think I’ll have to read it though when it’s the right mood sort of thing 🙂
Eva – ha,ha… I’m very lucky to have a HPB within walking distance! Of course, I can never walk there because what if I find lots of books 🙂
litlove – Oh great to hear about Love Falls. I don’t remember reading much about that book before but I liked the synopsis so I hope I’ll enjoy it!
Michelle – I know, it’s such a treat! Love book sales.
Stephanie – Yay, another thumbs up for Prep. That one has been on my wish list forever so I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Somer – Oh lucky you! hopefully they are remodeling to expand the store? Have fun when you finally get to hunt for some good books 🙂
Lisa – I know! I love it when I have such finds like that.
Nymeth – Darn. I’m sorry you couldn’t get into Blindness. I’ll try it when I’m definitely up for something a bit different and I’ll keep you guys posted. I’m still smiling about my good deal 🙂
I never plan to buy either, but I always do. Enjoy the books!
Kristy – What can we do but give in right? 🙂
Good job on the HPB finds! Did you get a 2009 calendar adn use the Jan/Feb coupon? I’ll be going there on a date night Friday–dinner and book shopping. What could be more romantic? 🙂
A little book therapy always does the trick, no? I really liked Prep.
At $5, you can’t lose. Something’s got to be worth that much.
I loved Blindness. Many images have stayed with me after several years. I can’t remember, but I don’t think I’ve read anything else by Saramago. This one is really very, very good, though. Can’t wait to hear what you think. Are you going to see the movie, too? I haven’t watched it yet. Waiting for Netflix.
Stefanie – Can you believe I didn’t? They told me they were sold out. Grr… Anyway, I think your date night sounds wonderful – that’s my kind of date night too 🙂 Have fun shopping!
Tara – It does! Man, I really need to read Prep – it sounds like a good one!
Bookfool, aka Nancy – That’s right! I think this is why I’ve slowly stopped going to movies. They’ve gotten so expensive.. this way I’ve got lots of hours of entertainment for a mere $5!
Les in NE – I wanted to see the movie but I think we missed it – what a bummer. I typically prefer to read a book first but you know how that goes sometimes. I am a bit hesitant to start Blindness because it just sounds good but not light reading that’s for sure so I need to be ready for it. I’m looking forward to it!
I’m hoping to read both Blindness and Helpless this year. Looking forward to your thoughts on them when you get to them.
There’s nothing like being able to do a little discount book shopping. 🙂 It looks like you have some great reading choices there. I have a copy of Blindness in my TBR collection. I look forward to reading your thoughts on it.
All those books for $5! You surely couldn’t pass them up! There are several there I want to read, too. I will have to get around to visiting my HPB sometime this spring!
Wish they had one of those stores near me. Then again, maybe not. Hubby would kill me! LOL Serena’s library is having another sale again this Sat. I don’t know if I can hold back.
