Friends

I just came home from dinner with some friends. It was a goodbye dinner for one of our friends who is moving to Arizona. She’s very excited and I’m happy for her but at the same time I’m bummed out for me. Selfish reasons of course.

Is it me or does it get harder and harder to make new friends as we get older? I’ve never been one to have tons of friends but the friends I do have are my best friends and have been so for years. We keep in touch regularly but unfortunately they don’t all live in my area. Thank goodness this girl just moved back!

Anyway, it’s days like these that remind me of high school and college. When nothing was as important as calling up a friend to talk on the phone for hours. Who cared if we had rehashed the same conversation over lunch already?

So tonight no real book talk, just these lines on friendship:

She is a friend of mind. She gather me, man. The pieces I am, she gather them and give them back to me in all the right order. It’s good, you know, when you got a woman who is a friend of your mind. ~ Toni Morrison, Beloved.
