Sue Walker

The Reunion

Innes Haldane thought she left The Unit, a home for troubled teens, far behind in the recesses of her memory, after all she was only there for a year but now almost thirty years later someone from The Unit is contacting her.

What happened on a camping trip in 1977? Where the therapies used at The Unit to blame or where these teens beyond help? Finally the events of that fateful night will be revealed.

As she tries to contact the members of The Unit she finds that despite leading successful and seemingly normal lives, two have committed suicide. Convinced that these deaths are linked, Innes believes that it can all be traced back to The Unit.

I found the story moved at a fast paced and what’s more even though it is told by alternate narrators and between past and present I was never once confused. Walker’s ability to make each character quite distinguishable is remarkable.

What I didn’t expect though was to have to wait almost until the end of the book to find out what the crime had been. I enjoy when writers drop hints and slowly unfold the storyline but by the time I was at the end of this book it was hard to be surprised. It was almost a relief to say so that’s what happened. Not that it made it any easier to read about it. The crime was gruesome indeed.
