Leora Skolkin-Smith

Edges

The land of Israel in the early 60s comes alive through the story of Liana, a fourteen year old who travels with her mother and sister to Jerusalem. Her mother is in mourning, her family is a stranger to her and the new land is teeming with smells and sights all new to her.

Liana’s only way to survive is by dreaming of her escape to Paris but a fortuitous meeting with the son of an American diplomat will lead her on a personal journey. After witnessing a horrific event, she’ll confront her fears and will find the release from her mother’s overwhelming love.

Ms. Skolkin-Smith’s first novel is a captivating story giving the reader a view into a land and culture of another time. I was in awe of the fierceness of Liana’s character. She seemed a much older fourteen year old than any I’ve ever known but then again hers was not a typical life.

This slim novel has wonderful images and evocative writing. It is a novel about coming-of-age and about family and love. I imagine it is one that will stay with me for a long time.
