Fans of the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series will not be disappointed in this latest novel featuring the traditionally-built private detective Precious Ramotswe. This time she is facing one of her toughest battles, how to lose weight.
While Mma Ramotswe contemplates how to have a healthier lifestyle, her clever assistant, Grace Makutsi, thinks she has scared off her finacee after admitting that she is a feminist.
On top of the personal issues, the Lady Detective has to uncover the identity of a blackmailer, a food thief and an advice columnist. And, let’s not forget the lovely blue shoes that Mma Makutsi will have no matter how comfortable they are or not.
McCall Smith infuses this novel with light humor even when presenting some tough subjects and while the reader doesn’t get a madcap adventure in crime there is a lovely sense of love for family, friends and country.
I only wish there had been more mention of the two children that are now in Mma Ramotswe’s life but hopefully next installment they’ll make a more important appearance.
You certainly don’t have to be a mystery reader to enjoy this novel or any others in the series. I’ve always thought that the mysteries were second to the graceful setting of Botswana. So grab a cup of bush tea and enjoy.
