“I decided the most ominous thing about Mr. Sand was a deeply embedded issue with self-control, and the only thing I was in danger of dying from was boredom. Of course, that was before I really knew him. And before my death the very next day.”

Joanna Archer thought she was just on a blind date perhaps set up by her beautiful sister Olivia but in fact she was about to confront the demons that haunt Las Vegas. In Sin City there are forces of Light battling Shadows and Joanna is caught in the middle.

Being a superhero wasn’t necessarily part of Joanna’s life plan. Brutally assaulted when she was a teenager, she’s grown up to be a tough woman, spending her evenings taking photographs and training in Krav Maga, but now her destiny is calling for her and Joanna finds that this might also be the perfect way to seek her revenge.

This is an interesting series debut in which the urban fantasy has everything from an evil father, superhero powers, fierce fights and even a dash of romance. Some of my favorite scenes involved Ben Traina, the handsome cop who knows something fishy is going on in Las Vegas, and the visit to the comic bookstore Joanna makes to try and learn more about herself and her new world.

But, this is a complicated book. While it was a quick read, I wish the author had done less of a set-up. I think some of the mysteries could have been revealed in forthcoming books. As it is there are many confrontations with bad guys but the big showdown seems to take forever to get to and by then this reader was a bit weary of keeping track of glyphs, conduits, and all the other elements which were part of the story.
