"Moth left the aerodrome grinning with excitement. A flight in a dragonfly was the best birthday gift Skyhigh could have given him, and his ears still rang from the racket of wins and whirring engine."
On his thirteenth birthday all Moth can think of is one day becoming a Skyknight. The Skyknights are the protectors of Calio, the moutain city they live on at the edge of the world. His goal seems unlikely given his station in life but he still dreams about it.
The one thing Moth never expected though was to hear his friend, Leroux's tale about the real origins of his pet kestrel, Lady Esme. Long ago Leroux had been one of the legendary Eldrin Knights and had gone across the Reach. There he met a beautiful woman, Lady Esme, but the two encountered the wrath of the Skylords and Lady Esme paid the price. Now Leroux wants Moth to save Lady Esme and that will mean Moth will have to cross into the Reach.
Moth thinks Leroux's tale is too fanciful but with the help of his friend, Fiona, the two will explore what is beyond the fog and into the Reach. The adventuresome twosome will encounter magical creatures, a beautiful land and a dangerous world ruled by the Skylords.
Although this is Moth's story there are other major characters in the novel who have their dreams to realize and fears to conquer. I particularly enjoyed Fiona's character, who is vulnerable yet fearless.
This wonderful world that the author created has adventure and action for readers young and old. And, just as you turn the last page you can't wait to see what will be next for Moth in this Skylords trilogy.
