Tonight I Said Goodbye

Fans of crime fiction can add Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard to their list of favorite PIs. This debut novel starts with the two private investigators hired to look into the death of Wayne Weston, also a local detective, and the disappearance of his wife and daughter.

At first reluctant to look into the case, Perry and Pritchard start finding clues that this was no suicide as the police had first speculated and begin a full investigation. With the help of Amy Ambrose, a newspaper reporter, they start to close in until they are met with resistance from law enforcement and a real estate mogul and even have some confrontations with the Russian mafia.

Pritchard remains in Cleveland to continue the investigation while Perry tracks down Weston’s wife and daughter in South Carolina. Even though there is a lot of action that keeps the story moving forward, at times I wish there had been more attention paid to character detail, especially in the case of Betsy, the young daughter. There were times her character didn’t ring true for me.

Nevertheless, this is a fast-action novel that keeps you reading and guessing. I really enjoyed the relationship between Perry and Pritchard. The two seasoned ex-cops share an easy camaraderie and I hope that in the next book their lives will be more closely examined.
