Fans of thrillers will no doubt want to add Volk’s Game to their summer reading beach tote. With an original character, Alexei Volkovoy, aka Volk, this thriller takes the reader to the underworld of Russian crime.
Volk is approached to carry out the heist of all time, to smuggle out a Da Vinci masterpiece from the Hermitage Museum. Despite the risks involved, knowing that he can get his hands on Leda and the Swan proves to be a great temptation for Volk so together with his girlfriend and partner in crime, Valya, the action for this thriller is set.
Brent Ghelfi has created quite an interesting and original character in Volk. A tortured and flawed character, Volk has fought in the Russian Army and has had to deal with emotional and physical scars from his time in the army. As the “hero” he is not really anyone’s idea of a good guy but he does believe is his own code of justice.
You probably won’t find a character to relate but what is interesting is that I thought each character kept me guessing as to what they might do next. There were some very obvious bad guys but there were also some good twists and turns in this narrative.
If you are looking for a thriller this may be the one that keeps you on the edge of your seat but I should add that this book should come with a warning about some of the violence. It got quite gruesome at times.
