Everyone has at one point or another lived in a house with a strange noise. Perhaps it's a little tap or creak so when Amanda starts to hear strange noises she attributes it to a leaky pipe or perhaps even a mouse scurrying between the walls. However, the noises start to intensify and never stop.
Amanda starts to notice changes in herself and even periods of blackouts. Her marriage which once seemed comfortable and stable is also undergoing a shift and every little word or look is misconstrued and leads to an argument.
After Amanda consults a book on demonology she suspects she might be possessed but how absurd is that? Amanda goes as far as to consult a healer but by then it might be too late. The escalation of the violence and fear in Amanda makes for a truly creepy tale.
Sara Gran's novella works very well not only as a suspense-filled story but also one that analyzes the psyche. Is Amanda possessed or just having a breakdown? The reader sees how a strong career woman is losing control in both her personal and professional life and with no one there to help her.
This is a book to be savored in one sitting, just make sure you keep the lights on and the windows tightly shut.
