Laura Caldwell

Look Closely

This novel is chick-lit author Laura Caldwell’s venture into the mystery/suspense genre. Manhattan attorney Hailey Sutter receives a letter with the cryptic message, “There is no statute of limitations on murder. Look closely,” and thus begins a search that will make her question her past, her memories and her family.

Even though Hailey is busy representing a key client in Chicago, she finds a way back to her childhood home in Woodland Dunes where her mother died of a head injury when Hailey was seven. Hailey only remembers bits and pieces of that fateful night and realizes she needs to contact her brother and sister to find out what happened.

The last time Hailey saw her brother and sister was around the time of her mother’s death. Now that she’s trying to contact them there are more barriers coming between them as she finds both of them have gone missing.

Suddenly everyone becomes a suspect in Hailey’s mind. If only she could just remember that night. I was intrigued by the premise of the book and the way the author handled the memory flashes. It definitely helped with the suspense. However, the book lost some of its credibility when some of the characters’ actions weren’t explained or the reasons were just too farfetched.
