I decided to “tune out” a bit from the internet this weekend and just spent time with the books but now my bloglines have exploded and I feel so behind. I’m sure you all can relate right? And, don’t even get me started on emails I owe.
But, with all the piles of books waiting to be read, I think every once in a while it’s good to tune out the world and get to reading! I know I will catch up on my emails and blog reading but for now let me tell you what books had me so occupied this weekend.
- Out by Natsuo Kirino. Wow, this book was intense. I honestly had a very bizarre dream last night and I think it was related to this book. I finished it and will have a review soon but let me just say I’m so glad to have finally read it. To think that I had started this book several years ago and couldn’t get into it at the time. See, I do think there is such a thing as right book/wrong time.
- The Wise Woman by Philippa Gregory. I’m more than half way through this book and it’s a quick read but I’m actually thinking about stopping. While I like the setting, the English Reformation, the characters are getting on my last nerve. I don’t like any of them. Normally, I don’t have problem not finishing a book but usually I figure this out by page 30-40 or so and now I feel like I’ve gone past the point of no return. So, we’ll see if I finish this one. Has anyone read it? Any thoughts on it?
- Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie. Poirot investigates the murder of a 13-year-old girl at a Halloween party. Lots of potential culprits so far and I’m really enjoying the story as it develops. While I don’t make it a point to figure out whodunit when I read mysteries I can’t help but want to try with this one. I want to know whodunit and why.
- Note to Self by Samara O’Shea. It’s rare that I go too long without writing in my journal but I realized that it’d been almost a month since I wrote anything. Lucky for me I’ve been reading this book and it really made me think what have I been waiting for? Get back to writing. So I did just that this weekend.
I have so many books waiting to be reviewed too and hopefully I won’t get too caught up in just reading and I can tell you about those soon. Hope everyone had a nice weekend and look forward to catching up on your blogs!

I want to read Out! Will have to check it out from the bookstores! I can’t wait to read your review on it!
Hope you’ve a great weekend, Iliana! 🙂
Sounds wonderful! When BBAW is over, I’m going to do just that! A blogcation with books. 😉
Note To Self sounds like a great journalling book – I might have to check it out. Sounds like you are enjoying it??
I’m almost always behind! LOL. Again, I’m glad you liked Out this time around. And yes it sure is intense!
I’m thinking of trying the Read-a-thon this time, it would be a great excuse to focus on reading.
Good for you! Sometimes I feel I spend more time reading blogs than reading books. But I guess reading is reading, right?
I’m adding Note to Self to my wish list. I love books like this. Thanks for letting me know about it.
I read the Philipia Gregory book awhile ago. I agree, the characters could be grating, but, overall, I enjoyed the stories. There are more than one book, I think, in that “series.” Honestly, I don’t remember too much.
O my goodness, my bloglines continue to explode, and I have a feeling it will explode even more so this week with BBAW!
I read the first hundred or so pages of The Wise Woman, and I too wasn’t blown away. Halloween Party is pretty good.
Melody – I think you’d enjoy it. The characterization development, even of the minor characters, is fantastic.
Amy – Oh wow, yes, I think you have your hands full with BBAW this week 🙂 I need to stop by and see what’s been happening but again congrats on being able to put this together – very cool!
Karen – I am enjoying it. I feel as if I’m reading something a friend would write – the writer seems very open and even shares her own journal entries.
tanabata – I really want to participate in the Read-A-Thon! I didn’t get to last time as I think I was out of town and I might be again this time around but I’m keeping my fingers crossed 🙂
aka Nik – I read so many blogs it’s crazy! In a good way of course but yes lately I feel like my book reading time has really gone down. And, I don’t even have a job right now – I can only imagine how it will be once I jump back into the workforce – yikes!
Nicole – Oh I didn’t realize this was part of a series. I do like reading about the role of wise women and how easy it was to believe in magic – good or bad. But, I’m having such a hard time with the main character falling “in love” (I don’t really think it’s love) with such a vile character.
Serena – Ha,ha.. Yes, I’m sure after BBAW it will be crazy right? When I read the nominees for BBAW I realized there are lots of new book blogs I have yet to discover 🙂
Katherine – Glad it wasn’t just me with Wise Woman! I probably will finish it as I’ve come so far but I’m still not happy with the characters! 🙂
I tried one book by Philippa Gregory and I think that was enough for a lifetime (Wideacre). Iliana, do check your email from me, you are the winner of Matrimony!
I took most of yesterday for myself and just read — very relaxing. I’m scrambling around to get things done today, but it was worth it!
I’m going to read The Hallowe’en Party next month — it’s one of my favorites to read this time of year!
I haven’t read any of them, but all the great things I keep hearing about Out are making it harder and harder to resist.
I’ve had quite a few right book/wrong time experiences myself.
I need to take that advice and tune out! Teaching classes online and taking grad courses online has me buuuurned out on the ‘net.
Oh! Hallowe’en Party is one of my favorite Christies! Thanks for the reminder — I need to get a copy for next month’s Hallowe’en binge. 😀
I hear you on being behind! I feel like I need to just take a day and do nothing but read…then take another day and do nothing but blog! Good luck!
Every once in a while I feel burned out posting and answering to comments. A book vacation sounds just great. I was reading almost all weekend as well other than the concert in San Diego.
Out is a creepy book. I skimmed through it when it arrived in the mail. So it’s on the pile and I need to tune in for it. Maybe Halloween?
Tara – Thanks for the book! Oh and really, no more Gregory for you? I did like The Other Boleyn Girl a lot but I’m so disappointed with this one. I’m still struggling along…
Ruth – I know what you mean, now I have to catch up on all the stuff I refused to do over the weekend! haha… I’m almost done with Halloween Party. It’s so good.
Nymeth – I really want to read more by her. I think this book goes way beyond the regular thriller so lots of good material to think about.
Andi – I can only imagine! I think it’s good to take some time off from the net – even if it’s just a day. Helps a lot to reconnect with the real world 🙂
Karen – Really? How cool. I still haven’t figured out whodunit but I have some ideas. I’m sure I’ll be way off! haha
Tiffany – I’m trying to figure out if I could come up with a schedule like that you know. I feel like I’m constantly behind reading and blog reading. But how do you juggle them to still do both? We need a 48 hour day 🙂
Matt – Yes, I know the feeling. And, a book vacation is a must. I think I need to do this more regularly. Hope you’ll look into Out. It’s strength in my opinion is in the characterization.
